DESCRIPTION 1968 Ford MUST 2-DRIts finally time to sell our baby, yes everyone on EBay has the first legitimate shot at owning this incredible 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback. This car is so show room ready that it has sat on our showroom floor for the last 5 years. That is when it has not been in car shows, taken for a drive, a small tweak here and there in the shop or just driven to a meeting of many other classic muscle cars in the area for a fun cruise. A little background on this car ten years ago we had a chance to purchase a clear title, drive-able 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback. It was gray primer, original body parts, seats, and in street legal driving condition. After the car sat for about 9 months during this time we put a plan together with who and how we were going to approach body work, engine work, interior and how best to do a ground up restoration. We do not have a body shop at the dealership so after talking to numerous local body shops and restoration centers we finally chose who and how we were going to do the body from the ground up. We then met with our fixed operations department (parts, detail and service) and formulated a plan on what we were going to do with parts ordering, powertrain choices, interior restoration, the order all of this was going to happen and why as to have an orderly process of completely restoring the car and doing everything just right. For those of you that own restoration shops you do this daily but for us we wanted to do it right and make everything work for the best possible value, look and performance, this was our first from the ground up projects, it was a learning experience but for sure we ended up with an awesome, beautiful, powerful, and fun to drive car.
So here is how we spent the next 4 years on the car, first two techs completely disassembled the car and placed it on what is known as a rotisserie lift so the body shop could paint the automobile inside and out with nothing on it. We took out the engine, electrical system, gauges, dash parts, seats, wipers, hood, doors trunk lid headlights and anything that is not directly welded to the uni-body frame. This way the body shop can replace any body part that is not perfect without using one ounce of bondo or lead. A rotisserie lift also allows you to paint and work on a car exactly like the factory does from stripping (we sandblasted the entire basic uni-body car) painting the interior, engine c compartment, rust proofing and making sure every nook and cranny is perfect, this process took about two years from tear down to paint. When painted no clear coat was applied during this first paint. Next we looked at what we could keep or needed to order for doors, glass, hood, fender wells, bumpers, axles, electrical, suspension, engine, transmission, interior, dash, gages, what was available original, aftermarket, while keeping everything in perfect order. I know it takes 20 minutes to do one of these restorations on television but not so for the quality Ford dealer that wants a showroom, show quality car. Next we began to work on some more additional components of the body by ordering new doors if needed, bumpers or re-chrome what we had, at this time we had to start making powertrain and suspension decisions so everything went together while keeping the body and frame all original. Our next step was to pick a powertrain and suspension. We had already pulled the 289 CI V-8, the FMX automatic transmission, original rear axle, suspension, electrical system, dash gauges and all extraneous parts, when car was stripped for rotisserie lift and first paint. At this time, we chose a new front suspension without power steering although vastly improved handling and disc front brakes with no body alterations, we then replaced the rear axle with a mid-1990’s Ford Explorer 3.73 limited slip axle with disc brakes that fit perfectly. We chose a fuel injected 302 V-8 engine teamed with an AOD automatic. We kept the original 289 and FMX crated it and it will go with the car, upon request. The 302 V-8 fit perfectly with no body alterations, we built it up to 500 horsepower, built the transmission to handle the power and scoot right down the road. We kept all of the original gauges replaced anything that was broken and kept what did work, we added nothing over the original gauges and dash parts with the exception of the radio. We have a mustang look alike Ford radio that is actually an am FM 10 disc CD changer with multiple rear deck speakers. The 68 fastback did come with a working tachometer; the speedometer/odometer are original. Our detail manager of 16 years was able to completely restore the interior with a factory original Pony interior kit. The inside of the car looks awesome and we stuck with the factory original interior package. I was amazed that our Detail Manager had these great job skills, it looks awesome. At any time please feel free to check our fantastic photos. This car is truly one of a kind, fun to drive and it’s time to move on to our next project. We are here to answer all of your questions but I would bid early and often if you want a shot at the beautiful Show Quality 1968 Mustang Fastback.
