Description of 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe |
This car was originally stored in Alabama until it was sold in 1963 and brought to Georgia, where it was driven for approximately two years, by the new owner. Once again, in 1965, it was stored in a barn, and remained there, until I purchased the car in August 2015. (50 years later). I purchased the car "AS IS", because it is believed, that this car was used to transport illegal alcohol, also known as "MOONSHINE". I was told by people that were around these cars during that era, that the car has the suspension, common to cars driven by the MOONSHINE RUNNERS. There are heavy duty rear shocks, with heavy duty springs, to conceal the weight of the load of alcohol. Shocks were placed at offset angles for high speed turns, front truck spring, and shocks with heavy duty springs, with special brackets. It also has a larger radiator, with unique upper water hoses to clear a larger fan, to keep the engine water temperature cool. All consistent with a MOONSHINE RUNNERS CAR. The engine is a 110HP Mercury Flathead with 15" Ford Wheels. The car remains slightly higher then a stock 1940 Ford Coupe. After 50 years of Barn dirt and dust, I washed the car, but did not detail it to retain the originalpatina. It has an older re-paint, a very solid straight body, and nice original interior. The 94 Carburetor and spark plugs were replaced with new ones. All the fluids have been changed in the engine and running gear. I did replace all the tires with new, and they are the exact size of the original tires. I have photos of the car with the original tires when I purchased it. Unfortunately, they were not holding air and I had to replace them. Hood, doors and trunk have excellent fit. The car drives and stops well. Many Early Fords, like this 40 Ford Coupe, were racing the back roads of Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and North Carolina, during the 40's and 50's. Unfortunately, many of these cars were confiscated by Federal Agents. It is a known fact of history, that quite a few NASCAR drivers started as MOONSHINE RUNNERS back in the day !
