For sale in our Detroit showroom is a classic 1957 Ford Thunderbird Convertible. The Ford Thunderbird began life in February 1953 in direct response to Chevrolet's new sports car, the Corvette, which was publicly unveiled in prototype form just a month before. Under rapid development, the Thunderbird went from idea to prototype in about a year, being unveiled to the public at the Detroit Auto Show on February 20, 1954. Like the Corvette, the Thunderbird had a two-seat coupe/convertible layout. Production of the Thunderbird began later on in 1954 on September 9 with the car beginning sales as a 1955 model on October 22, 1954. Though sharing some design characteristics with other Fords of the time, such as single, circular headlamps and tail lamps and modest tailfins, the Thunderbird was sleeker and more athletic in shape, and had features like a faux hood scoop and a 140 mph speedometer hinting a higher performance nature that other Fords didn't possess. This restored beauty only has 1,200 miles since it was completely restored. The exterior was professionally painted in a vibrant gloss red while the interior is custom stitched in white vinyl. The two complement each other very nicely. Under the hood you'll find the original 312 CID V8 engine backed by a 3-spd automatic transmission. The valve covers are the original Thunderbird ribbed covers that scream 50s style. It's probably the first thing you'll notice when you open the hood. Under the chrome air cleaner sits the stock style 4BBL carburetor that the purist's will surly love. The infamous porthole hard top is in amazing condition and painted to match the T-Bird . With the hardtop secured into place the road noise diminishes significantly. Other options include: AM radio, manual convertible top, wire wheels, power brakes, power steering, power seats, power windows, telescopic wheel, vinyl interior, and wide white wall radial tires. This is a classic Thunderbird with a timeless look which bodes well for an investment piece and a fun driver alike.
