Description of 1965 Ford Mustang Includes some GT options

1965 Mustang Fastback with many desirable options. Luxury “Pony” interior, original AM radio, power steering, power brakes, rally-pac, center console, styled steel wheels, remote controlled LH mirror and GT options. The car is not an original GT but is dressed as one. I believe the only GT option absent from this car is front disc brakes which could be added. GT options on the car include: fog lights, exhaust exiting through the rear valance panel, correct 4 barrel carburetor, GT badges and stripes. The luxury interior includes: deluxe woodgrain steering wheel, deluxe door panels, door-mounted courtesy lights, carpeted kick panels with stainless trim, deluxe five dial instrument panel, bright trimmed pedals, deluxe glovebox door and woodgrain trim.

There are cobra badges on the front fenders that were installed by a previous owner. Throughout my ownership of the car I have tried to keep it period correct including concourse correct belts and hoses. The only item I am aware of that is broke is the hinge on the ashtray at the back of the center console. The car has always been stored in a heated building.

This car is clean inside and out. Last year the front end was disassembled and the inside fenders and firewall were cleaned down to bare metal and repainted with satin black ceramic paint. The engine was repainted and new gaskets and seals installed. Seals and gaskets on the transmission were also replaced. There are no known mechanical issues with the car. The engine runs smooth and the transmission shift smoothly. All the glass appears to be original other than the front windshield which looks new.

I recently came across the person who originally started the restoration and he gave me the following history of the car. He purchased the car from the original owner in Pekin Illinois with 100,000 original miles on it. He replaced the following sheet metal: all new floor pans, trunk floor, rear frame rails, rear wheelhouses and both full rear quarter panels. Both quarter panels are OEM. One was purchased from the local Ford Dealer (last one available) and the other was found at an Indianapolis car show. The car was then sold to the 3rd owner who completed the restoration. The interior upholstery was replaced and the original engine and transmission were rebuilt. The car was painted and the restoration completed in 1988.

In the last year I replaced the following items:

  • Exhaust system
  • Water pump (Rebuilt OEM)
  • Fuel pump
  • All belts and hoses
  • Halogen headlights
  • Spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor and points
  • Correct Autolite carburetor
  • Correct air cleaner and valve covers
  • Front suspension bushings and ball joints
  • Heater box rebuilt.

In 2009 the following items were replaced:

  • Master cylinder and all 4 wheel cylinders
  • Power brake vacuum booster (OEM)
  • Battery (reproduction Autolite sta-ful)
  • Starter
  • Shock absorbers
  • Front swaybar

History: The restoration was completed in 1988 by the 3rd owner. The car was then sold at auction around 1991. Then in 1992 I purchased this car at another auction. In 2000 I sold the car to my sister who placed it in storage. I purchased the car back from her in 2006. At that time it was necessary to rebuild the brakes and carburetor and replace the battery to get it back on the road.

There is a slight vibration especially through the steering wheel at speeds above 50 MPH that I suspect may be due to the tires. The Goodyear tires are 28 years old but their condition appears very good for their age with no visible cracks. The car now has about 120,000 original miles (20,000 since being restored). The paint is 28 years old and does have a few chips that have been touched up. About 17 years ago I had a small dent in the left rear fender repaired as well as repair work on the lower front corners of the doors where the paint had bubbled up under the stripes. Since then a few very small bumps have appeared on the top of the rear fenders but are not very noticeable. To the critical eye the body could use some blocking to make it perfectly straight but the average person does not notice. The paint has a very glossy appearance and I would consider a high quality driver that still shows very well and turns heads everywhere you go. The car has won many trophies at local car shows (best of show, pony class, etc).
