Description of 1970 Ford Torino COBRA |
Up for auction today is a Marti-Report Verified 1 of 1 1970 Torino Cobra with a reported (but undocumented) 21k original miles. This car is extremely well optioned with Factory 4-speed, Power Windows, Air Conditioning, Power Steering, Power Disc Brakes, Black Bucket Seat Interior, AM/FM Stereo and more. This is also one of the best color combos. Very few Wimbledon White Cobras were produced and the car really looks nice with the black out on the hood. The Factory Black Bucket Seat/Center Console interior with comfort weave is also a rare option in the breed as many were bench seats. This option pairing is a very rich combo that looks great without trying to. The body, while pretty straight, does have some rust. The typical areas like the cowl, doors, floor pans and trunk lid exhibit rust and do need attention/replacement, please see pics. The trunk pan, frame rails, etc all look surprisingly good. There are several pictures here and we do have more so please ask if you would like to see something specifically. The paint is for the most part the original and still has some shine. The grill, which seems to be the Achilles Heel of Torinos is very nice. Bumpers will need to be re-chromed as will other trim. Overall though, this is a very good looking car with that cool 47 year old 'Patina' you just can't reproduce. This one would make a fun, no-guilt driver. Inside, the interior looks surprisingly nice. The seats are in good condition as is the original console. Two of the rear seat belts are still in what appears to be the factory protective plastic bags. The dash pad looks good though there is a small crack forming in the normal spot. The door panels and package tray do have some warping but overall this interior is quite serviceable. The gauges all work including the Rare Ribbon Tach, a rare factory option that was added. The Factory Power Windows are currently not working. The switches and contacts have not been taken apart and cleaned yet which would probably solve the problem. Under the hood, well actually poking out from it too, is the N-Code 429 Thunder Jet. Producing 360 Horsepower and 480 pound feet of torque, the N-Codes were no slouch. They produced their power much lower in the RPM range than Cobra Jets making them a great choice for street driving when paired with freeway friendly gearing such as the equipped 3.00 Traction-Lok this car was ordered with. This 429 fires up easily and sounds great through the freshly equipped 2 ½" Flowmaster equipped exhaust. It has been dressed with the Factory Finned Aluminum Cobra Jet Valve Covers and a Factory Shaker Ram Air System. The rare factory carburetor is still in place with its correct tag. Going through the gears this one has excellent low end torque and great midrange power. The 4-Speed Transmission is the correct RUG AU1 and shifts beautifully through the Factory Hurst Shift Linkage and the super rare original 4-speed Reverse Lock Out Rod is still in place. The clutch engages very smooth and even. The clutch linkage still has its original upper and lower return springs. The pedal is precise and the original pedal pad even has very minimal wear. The 3.00 Traction-Lok Axle has the 'N' (Nodular) Case and 31 Spline Heavy Duty Axles. The original '3 L 00' tag is still in place. This is the most copied differential there is due to a bullet proof design. The Air Conditioning set-up is very rare on 4 speed cars. This system is complete but will need to be serviced as it has been in storage for many years. The heater core was previously bypassed. This car drives very well, making the 21k original mile claim very believable. Steering is crisp and responsive with the original tie rod ends, ball joints, power steering hoses and gear. The car is quiet inside without the typical 'bucket of bolts' rattle of most high-mile cars. This is a very rare car, drive-able and enjoyable as-is. Drive & Enjoy it now, restore it later. This is a very rare opportunity on an extremely rare car. No Reserve Auction!!! First bid is very low & very reasonable...Bid to Win!
