Description of 1927 Ford Model T Roadster Pickup

1927 Ford Model T Roadster Pickup

Nicely restored 1927 Ford Model T Roadster Pickup. Rare running board spare wheel carrier. Ruxtel two speed rear end. Large Aermore exhaust whistle. Most desirable of the Model T Ford Roadster Pickups.

On April 25, 1925, Ford Motor Company introduced their first factory- produced pickup truck. This new model was officially called the Ford Model T Runabout with Pickup Body and was priced at $281.00 F.O.B. Detroit. The new Ford pickup was essentially roadster-or runabout-with an all steel bed that had a wood floor and an opening tailgate.

In 1926, Ford redesigned the Model T for the last time. This redesign included changes to the cowl, body, hood, fenders, and running boards. There were also changes made to the headlights, which were now mounted on the front fenders, and for the first time, the Model T had an opening door on the left side. For the first time since early 1914, colors were available in addition to optional wire wheels.

1927 was the last year Ford would produce the Model T. At the end of the model year, Ford had produced some 28,142 Model T Runabouts with Pickup Body trucks. Today, collectors refer to this model as a roadster pickup-a logical name as these trucks were built using roadster bodies and have a folding convertible top.

This 1927 Model T Ford Roadster Pickup is an extremely sharp vehicle that was completely restored. It has been mechanically and cosmetically maintained since the frame-off restoration was completed. It is in excellent overall condition inside and out. This vehicle has a VIN/engine number of 14177960, indicating it was one of the last Model T Fords built.

Unlike most Model Ts that are typically bare when it comes to options, this 1927 roadster pickup has several desirable period and factory accessories. This example is equipped with a desirable Ruckstell, two-speed rear end. The Ruckstell rear end gives the car four, forward speeds as opposed to the standard two speeds. It is also equipped with the optional wire wheels and includes a rare, factory supplied, running board spare tire carrier that was only available on the 1926 and 1927 roadster pickups. Other options include front and rear bumpers, a moto-meter with a dog bone radiator cap, a hand operated windshield wiper, a plated radiator shell and a large, Aermore exhaust whistle.

The body, fenders, hood and pickup bed are in excellent overall condition. They are all original, Henry Ford, steel parts. The doors fit the body properly and close easily. The fenders are just as straight on the bottom as they are on the top. The hood aligns properly with the radiator shell and cowl. The pickup bed has straight sides. Inside, the bed has the proper cargo slats and battery cover.

The dark blue and black paint is in excellent condition and shows hardly any wear. The minimal interior has been properly restored using the correct black pleated and buttoned upholstery as originally supplied. The folding top assembly is in excellent condition as well.

Under the hood, the famous 177 cubic inch/20 horsepower Model T engine is extremely clean and presentable. The car has its original six-volt electrical system as well as the original four coil and timer ignition system. The car starts easily and runs well. The two-speed, Model T planetary transmission shifts quietly; the brakes and steering are responsive. The two-speed Ruckstell rear end shifts easily. The five wire wheels are in excellent condition and have been fitted with newer, black wall tires.

The roadster pickup, or as Ford called it "the runabout with pickup box" is considered by collectors as one of the most desirable and popular body styles ever fitted to the Model T chassis. This example, with its quality restoration and desirable options will surely be a welcomed addition to any vintage car collection.
