You are looking at a rare survivor 1967 Mustang GTA Fastback with a great story. This California / Florida survivor is a nearly or all numbers matching rust free Mustang GTA Fastback that sports the original 390 big block and even has factory air conditioning.
For those who do not know, the GTA was a fairly scarce one year option only offered in 1967, which was the GT group, and the A stands for Automatic. The engine is the optional 390-inch V-8, which has an output of up to 325 horsepower and 427 pound-feet of torque. That’s within spitting distance of the 428 Cobra Jet’s 335 hp and 440 lb-ft. The S code Mustangs with the 390 are the largest horsepower offered that year.
We believe it has had two families that have owned this car since new and we believe it retains all of the original body and floor panels with no rust ever. It has all the options it came with from the factory and the Marti report to prove it. Below is a video collection of the Mustang: (1967 Mustang GTA Fastback I - YouTube) Video will open in a new window [isdntekvideo] (1967 Mustang GTA Fastback II - YouTube) Video will open in a new window [isdntekvideo] (1967 Mustang GTA Fastback III - YouTube) Video will open in a new window [isdntekvideo] Please scroll down and enjoy the 250+ photos. This Mustang also has the desirable deluxe (Luxury) interior which has the Shelby seats and stainless panels, power steering, power front disc brakes, air, am radio, GTA options, GT equipment group, upper and lower consoles and the interior courtesy lights. While not perfect, it is still a local car show winner and is probably one of the most original 1967 390 Big Block GTA fastbacks around and very few had factory air conditioning. The mileage is 106,787 and we believe it to be original. This Mustang started out in sunny California with a family that purchased the car new from McCoy Ford in Anaheim, California. It lived much of it's life in Orange, CA. The family took superb care of the car and then moved to Florida for several years before moving to Wisconsin. By the time it made it to Wisconsin, it was a collector car and it never saw a winter. Also note the undercoat was applied at the dealer when the car was new in California. We purchased the car from a family friend (a neighbor) of the original owner who purchased the car from the original family in the mid 1980s. He also took great care of the car and kept it stock and stored it in winters. While there is no VIN stamped in the engine blocks on these, we believe the engine to be the original 390 California Emissions motor that the car was born with. The transmission also appears to be original as does the 9" rear end, California emissions smog pump and air cleaner, body panels, floor pans, seats, and everything else we could find. So many of these cars are pieced together. It is refreshing to find one that is original. The engine has a factory service carb that has been rebuilt. The original is on the shelf in a box. It also has had a tune up, oil change, and new Firestone Wide Oval reproduction tires. What we believe to be the original 1967 tires are also included. They are the Firestone Wide Oval white stripe tires. The spare is an original Firestone Wide Oval redline. All the tires are F70-14 bias belted Firestones. The Mustang also includes the original jack and hardware, a number of spare parts as shown including what we believe to probably be reproduction exhaust tips. The glass is also original to the car and in great shape with the exception of a few chips in the original windshield. Exact reproduction windshields are available if this is a concern. Most of the paint is an early acrylic enamel repaint in the original Springtime Yellow. While the paint is shiny and in good shape, it does have checking and has had touch ups and partial repaints over the years. It also would benefit from some cleanup in the door jambs, in the trunk and hood areas. The good news is there is no or very little rust to deal with. We attribute this to the warm climates and the dealer installed rustproofing / undercoating.
The interior is very nice, aside from a small rip in the drivers seat as shown and it could stand a detailing. We are including new OEM style carpeting that has not been installed. Note the Mustang floor mats - we assume these are early reproductions but unsure. The headliner is perfect and as mentioned, it also has the rare overhead console. The gauges and radio work intermittently. The interior courtesy lights, glove box and console lights, dash lights and all exterior lights and horn work well.
The car starts, runs and stops well, aside from bias tires. We have not checked the front end and it is a bit sloppy at times but could also be the bias belted tires. There are small dribbles here and there from various places but no large leaks we found. We were impressed with how well the engine start, runs and idles although it is a bit cold blooded. The emissions pump is present but not functional. The A/C will need minimally a recharge. Note the original gas tank is included and has been dipped and sealed. It also may need u-joints, bushings and other maintenance due to age. We noticed the door and trunk seals are also in need of eventual replacement. The carpeting has faded but we are including new custom fit carpeting that was purchased but not installed.
If you are looking for a new car, perfect finish, no squeaks or rattles, or the reliability of a Toyota Camry, this car is not for you. If you like a bit of patina, understand what you are buying and are an originality freak like me, this vehicle deserves a closer look. Make no mistake that these are all projects or a work in progress to some degree and this example is no different. It is a high dollar car that has all the right equipment. While you might be able to find a small block, total project or pieced together car for less, this one is one of the most original you will find.
With the discovery of the original Bullitt and the recreations, as well as the 1967 Shelby GT350 and GT500 vehicles pulling historic values, this is a great investment.
