This 1933 Ford Vicky is a ground-up custom with no expense spared in it’s over 6-figure build out.
Purple Reign 1933 Ford Vicky show car - YouTube Video will open in a new window [isdntekvideo] The project got started with a brand new 1933 LAIDBACK VICKY body and chassis from Downs Manufacturing. The body combines the classic look of a Ford Vicky with a 3.5” chopped top, massive swooping fenders, raked windshield, and a killer scooped front-end reminiscent of ALLOWAY bodied front ends. As you would expect from Downs, the finish, fit, build out, and assembly is top-notch, and leaves nothing to be desired. Suicide doors seamless open with a touch of the wireless remote, with soft hinges to keep them from opening too fast. They close and line up with equal ease, and STAY shut thanks to high quality latch assemblies. The body is coated in layers of gorgeous House of Kolor KK13 Kandy Purple, Kustom Shop Triple Deep Black, and a band of Lime Gold Kandy to split things up. The finish is stunning in person, and catches the light so many different ways that it can look different depending on where you are standing when staring at it! The car has spent it’s life in climate-controlled garages under soft car covers, and with just over 243 miles showing on the odometer, it didn’t get much of a chance to see the elements, so it still shows wet and shiny all the way around, and has less than a handful of tiny little marks to be found like stone chip or light scuff. Keep in mind, this car has NOT been professionally detailed by us. We always just wipe them down, shoot them with an iPhone, and let you see what they REALLY look like, not some photo shop rendition of the car. Just imagine how incredible it will be when you take the time to wax it, polish all that gleaming aluminum, and really dress it up for the show! Chrome and polished goodies on the exterior are relegated to the Vintage looking FORD headlamps, side mirrors, slat-style grill insert, and the tail lamp surround. It rolls on a set of Boyd Coddington Signature Series J5R wheels wrapped in like-new BF Goodrich G-Force T/A radial tires which are sized 255/45ZR18 in back and 215/45ZR17 up front. Wheels look like new all the way around, and tires are issue free as well. It has been stored on a lift since built by its one and only prior owner, and the tires have no flat spots or issues because of it. The stance is brought to you courtesy of Air Ride Technologies, and the car has a very cleanly installed system with an automatic-start compressor, large tank, and digital control pod pre-programmed with full down, cruising, and full up positions for convenience and auto-leveling. When you start the car, it automatically goes up to ride hit when the key is turned on, and is so fast, it’s ready to go by the time you start it. It will air out just as fast, and you can dump it at a red light, hit the switch, and drive at full low too, as long as you mind the sharp turns. At cruise height, it is perfect for normal in-town and Interstate driving situations, and full-up really probably is only needed when trying to pull in a steep driveway or over a very large obstacle. Compressor is automatic, and refills as needed, so no switches to worry about, and the auto-level is really nice because it takes the guesswork out of adjusting it. You can change all the pre-programmed spots if you want to, and all the lights on the controller and LED readout work as they should. Everything is hidden in an easy to access compartment behind the seats. Real glass windows are custom cut to fit, and are scratch, chip, and damage free. They are treated to a healthy tint for looks. No wipers on this show-car, but a liberal coating of Rain-X on the sloped windshield probably blows the rain right off should you ever get caught in a downpour. Third brake light is cleanly installed under the rear window, and just below that is the pop-out fuel door. LED tail lamps are tucked neatly into each rear fender, and let everyone know you’re stopping! Exterior lights for high and low beam, brake, and turn signal work as they should. Tall people can NEVER find a Vicky or 5-window they can comfortably fit inside. So when laying out the plans for this car, measurements were taken, seat tracks adjusted, and the entire interior designed to accommodate not only frames up to 6’4” in height, but those in the 5’8” range as well! It is SUPER roomy, and once inside, my 5’11” self felt quite comfy, with good headroom, easy side mirror use, and a clear view of what was in front of me. The full custom interior design is in remarkable condition, and has no signs of any damage, disrepair, or issues. Full length banded carpeting in automotive grade material was installed over a layer of heat and sound proofing material, and runs the length of the cars floor. It is covered by matching banded floor mats up front, that are a good vacuuming away from perfect. Leather and Alcantara grace the low profile bucket seats that are custom stitched and seamed to match the door panels. All of it looks fantastic, and is rip, stain, tear, and issue free. Leather covers the kick, side, and rear trim segments of the car, and the center console lifts to access the A/C controls, with the air ride and power window switchgear just ahead of it. A full custom-stitched leather headliner graces the ceiling of the car, and is in fantastic condition as well. A billet steering drop holds a chrome tilt steering column with FORD banjo wheel. LOKAR provided the angled long-length shifter with 8-Ball topper, matching boot, and lighted gear indicator base. A custom audio head unit was installed in the car to fill the dash location for it, but stereo installation was not a priority and was not completed. ISS Pro flame face gauges were installed across the smoothed Down’s dash, and they are set up to monitor fuel level, volts, oil pressure, and engine temp, as well as speedometer/odometer and tachometer. Above them, indicator bulbs let you know when the turn signals or high beams are on. Slimline defrost and A/C vents are on top of the dash, while dual A/C vents are on each side of the center console. Other than that, the dash is smooth, clean, and covered in the same Triple Black finish as the top of the car. Pull the billet release for the hood, and lift it sideways on its stanchion, and you are met by a very clean engine bay with a essentially new GM Performance 350ci RAMJET fuel-injected V8. The Ram Jet 350 combines the classic look of the original Rochester mechanical injection system with the dependability and optimized performance of contemporary port fuel injection. A cast-iron engine block is matched with a durable rotating assembly that delivers a pump-gas-friendly 9.0:1 compression ratio, as well as a smooth hydraulic roller camshaft that complements power delivery with a great idle quality. The engine puts out 345HP@5,000rpm and 396 LB/FT of torque @3,600rpm, for more than enough power to get this Street Rod hustling down the road. More importantly, it does so with a reliable, easy to maintain and service motor that doesn’t require constant adjusting or tuning. Specs are as follows: • Engine Type: Chevy Small-Block V-8 • Displacement (cu. in.): 350 • Bore x Stroke (in.) : 4.000 x 3.480 • Block: Cast-iron with two-bolt main caps • Crankshaft (P/N 10243068): Cast-iron • Connecting Rods (P/N 10108688): Powdered-metal steel • Pistons (P/N12571703): Hypereutectic aluminum • Camshaft Type (P/N 14097395): Hydraulic roller • Camshaft Lift (in.): .431 intake / .451 exhaust • Camshaft Duration (@.050 in.): 196° intake / 206° exhaust • Cylinder Heads (P/N 12528913): Vortec iron; 64-cc chambers • Valve Size (in.): 1.940 intake / 1.500 exhaust • Compression Ratio: 9.0:1 nominal • Rocker Arms (P/N 12367346): Aluminum roller style • Rocker Arm Ratio: 1.5 • Recommended Fuel: Premium Pump • Ignition Timing: 34° Total @ 4,000 • Maximum Recommended rpm: 5600 • Balanced: External The engine was treated to a variety of show-polished accessories and upgrades to dress it up a bit more, and custom hugger headers were installed for clearance a bit more rumble from the V8. It has not leaked or dropped fluid during its time with me, and starts right up with a healthy roar whenever you turn the key. Idle is smooth and clean, and the beauty of fuel-injection means you are ALWAYS ready to roll! Snick the 4L60E Automatic Overdrive transmission into gear and press down on the accelerator, and you are quickly and easily whisked away down the road. Transmission is built for reliability and cruising, and it shifts clean and smooth without any lurching or heavy feel. The ride quality from the SHOCKWAVES air-suspension system on the car is exceptional, and easily takes bumps in stride without any excessive body roll and wallow when cornering. Interstate cruising is a dream, and I have personally taken the car on a 38 mile round trip in a mix of city and highway driving without any issues whatsoever. It stays cool thanks to the massive GRIFFIN aluminum Street Rod radiator mated to a temperature controlled electric fan. Even with the A/C on at a stop light, it stays at 190! The car is so well-insulated, and has such a swept back roof line, that wind noise is minimal when compared to most street rods. IT’s easy to carry on a conversation in the cabin, even at highway speeds, and the car has a balanced road feel that inspires confidence to anyone driving it. Steering is quick and direct, with no excessive slop or looseness. Four-wheel disc brakes are supplied by SSBC, and are show polished for looks but still have fantastic stopping power without any odd modulation, pulling, fade, or wander. The chassis of this machine is what holds it all together, and it is all DOWNS Manufacturing underneath, with a full tube cage chassis finished in gloss black holding all the aforementioned suspension and powertrain components together. If you took the time to put it on the lift and wash it, it would be ready for car show mirrors save for a couple small marks on the under-fender liners from normal road debris. This car was built for the one and only previous owner at just over $140k when new, and the few “Laid-Back Vicky” that have come on the market over the years typically still get priced close to six figures. The vehicle is located in our Fort Myers, FL warehouse, and is just 20 minutes away from Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) if you want to fly in and see it.
