When Ford first made the Boss 302 in 1965, they decided to have only four colors; Bright Yellow (649 made), Calypso Coral (410 made), Acapulco Blue (375 made), Wimbledon White (194 made) for a total production of 1628. As you can see the Yellow Bosses outsold the other colors by far! Ford knew what the best colors were at the time by all the research they had done. Motor Trend did the first article on a 302 and on the cover was a Yellow Boss 302. There best quote was “It was the nearest thing to a trans-am car you could put a license plate on.” Ford published a short magazine for their mechanics called “Shop Tops”. It had almost four pages just on the Boss. On the cover was, again, a Yellow Boss 302. The first road test done by Car and Driver had some very outstanding quotes such as “Fords answer to the Z-28 rates an A!” Another great quote about the Boss said it is “the new standard by which everything from Detroit must be judged.” Some interesting developments happened when they were doing testing on the handling on the new Boss. The man they decided to use to develop the 302 was Mat Donner. He had been doing developmental work on suspension on Fords for years. From the top of Ford Motor Company, Bunkie Knudsen issued the order to create “the best handling street car on the planet- bar none!” After Donner’s magic tricks the Boss was handling so well that anytime the car was taken out for a test run the driver had to wear a helmet and a fire suit. This was the first time any FORD handled quick enough to require that!! The handling was so good that it was pulling apart the SHOCK TOWERS!! They decided to reinforce the shock towers with a stiffened metal brace for the first time in Mustang history. Also, the front spindles were beefed up to handle the MUCH-IMPROVED HANDLING. These cars were incredible, and you have the chance to buy one of the RAREST Boss 302 made - The W Code 430 rear-end with the Factory oil cooler. The documentation on this car is remarkable. Again, the fact the Yellow was the color that everyone wanted was emphasized by the number of Yellow cars made in 1970 – 1454. The next closest color was Calypso Coral with 866 made – almost a two to one margin. There are certain reasons why some Bosses are worth more than others, that on first glance appear to be the same. The special thing this car has is actually more than one unique item. First, it is one of the rarest of all the ’70 Bosses as it was one of only 254 made with a W code 430 Detroit Locker rear end. There was a total of 7,014 Boss 302’s made in 1970. This was the same 9” Detroit Locker rear end they put in a 1965 Shelby. It was a bullet proof rear-end. It also has a special oil cooler that you will see in the pictures of the car. The next significant aspect for is the documentation that would come with a car. This cool Boss also has a listing of the owners it has had. There is a magazine article which includes some old history of the car. This 2001 article states the original mileage at that time was 64,000 miles. This was the year it was purchased by the current owner. Right now, the mileage shows 66,000 original miles. There is also a copy of the title from one of the previous owners also showing the mileage to be original. In the large documentation book which comes with the car, there are pictures of the car showing where the build sheet is found. These pictures also show that there is NO rust in the floors.
