In the mid-80s. nobody was really sure where performance was going. The horsepower wars were reigniting. but would it be good old cubic inches or sophisticated tech that would carry the day? The 5. 0 is legendary and obviously won that battle. but the guys at Ford's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) put on a pretty compelling demonstration with this car. Pulling 175 horsepower from a mere 2. 3 liters. taking 200 pounds off the nose. and adding a more sophisticated suspension and (desperately needed) 4-wheel disc brakes. makes this SVO feel quite contemporary today. The sleek bodywork has aged pretty well. too. and the recent repaint was wet sanded to give it a great shine. Sure. it's familiar. but the SVO tweaks like the special front end. built-in hood scoop for feeding the intercooler. and the "bi-plane" rear wing give it a very unique look. These were and remain rather rare cars. as they were far more expensive than a 5. 0. yet few people wanted them so they languished in showrooms and collectors never really grabbed them. But that's all changing now. and this nicely preserved silver SVO with a black stripe is the perfect choice for the performance enthusiast on a budget. The interior got some pretty significant upgrades. too. including special Recaro sport seats. a cool 3-spoke steering wheel. and a long list of standard features. The seats may be starting to show their age. but the rest of the interior is fresh. including the carpets. headliner. and dash pad. It's a great example of '80s design. with a flat-faced instrument panel full of easy-to-read gauges. a great-feeling leather-wrapped steering wheel. and sensible controls for the A/C and secondary systems that should look familiar to any Ford enthusiast. There's a newer Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo in the center stack. and you can see how far we've come by the simple little digital clock just below. now rendered obsolete. A 5-speed shifter with a leather knob and boot added some European flair and gave SVO buyers the idea that they were getting something more substantial than a garden-variety Mustang. and the back seat is still totally usable by real-sized human beings. And the Mustang's hatch is practical. big enough to carry your gear and with fold-down seats. a lot of it!The 2. 3 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is about as tough as they come. Adding boost meant that the engineers had to beef up the internals. and boy did they ever! These little engines are renowned for their durability and two years later. even the factory was shoving ever increasing levels of boost down its pipes. The electronics are also surprisingly robust and despite their high-tech nature. these are really reliable cars. The engine was freshly rebuilt. including a new roller cam inside for reliability. a rebuilt turbo. fresh radiator. some new wiring for the cooling fan. and a new A/C compressor and condenser. Underneath. there are new Koni shocks. as original (expensive!) and a fresh exhaust system that sounds great even for a four cylinder. The brakes were rebuilt with fresh calipers. pads. and lines. and the handsome 16-inch alloys are fitted with 225/50/16 Firestone radials. Complete with an SVO Certificate. Marti Report. and restoration information. this well-documented and restored SVO remains a lot of fun and the price can't be beat.
