Description of 1972 Ford Mustang Convertible

Up for bidding is a VERY rare optioned 1972 Ford Mustang Convertible. I apologize in advance for any lack of information as I am listing this car for my father and I am not well informed on these Mustang models. The history as I know it is: my father purchased this car some time in the early 90's from his next door neighbor, I believe the neighbor was not the original owner. The car was being stored outside under a tarp for a number of years before my father purchased it. It had last been registered and driven (inspection sticker says 1987) in the late 80's. After purchase, the car was driven to an airplane hanger(indoor) and stored for at least a decade before being moved back to my fathers garage where it has sat inside ever since.

He always had plans to restore the car but his age and declining health have finally forced him to let it go. This is a special car and deserves a proper complete restoration! I will do my best to inform you on the good and the not so good. It is highly unlikely that there is another Mustang such as this one still on the road! A Marti report was ordered in 2013 (a picture is shown in this ad). The details are as follows:

VIN/Serial Number: 2F03Q173586

This is a "Q Code" Cobra Jet 351C-4V optioned convertible equipped with a 4-speed manual! (when is the last time you saw one of those?!)

The listed options are:

Black power top with glass backlite

4-speed manual transmission

E70X14 belted tires, white sidewalls

Power steering

AM radio

Color keyed racing mirrors

Competition suspension

Exterior was painted in Medium Bright Yellow and the interior was finished in Black Sebring Knit/Corinthian Vinyl

The rear axle was standard 3.50 final drive.

The statistics are as follows:

1 of 492 with this paint code (out of 125,813 total production)

1 of 245 with these paint/trim codes

1 of 201 with this engine/transmission combination!

Given the rarity of the paint/trim codes and the engine combo, it is very possible this could be the only surviving 1972 Cobra Jet/4-speed manual Mustang Convertible in Medium Bright Yellow paint!

Now that THAT is out of the way, let's talk about condition:

The engine DOES run (not terribly well) and the car will move (I have videos of it running). The brakes are marginal at best. The transmission seems to be working fine though it is leaking. The odometer shows 21,319 miles which is obviously 121,319 actual miles. I have not checked the power top operation. The fuel tank needs to be replaced, it's very rusty inside.

Speaking of rust, there are several areas of visible rust on the car though the frame rails and structural components appear to be in very solid shape. The floor pans would definitely need to be replaced, there are holes on both sides next to the rockers. The right front inner fender liner is rotted out underneath the battery tray. The frame rails, rocker pinch welds, structural reinforcements, cowl, front and rear suspension and door frames all look SOLID. For having spent it's entire life in the North East, the undercarriage looks pretty good to these eyes!

On the exterior, the car received a VERY poor respray some time before it was stored. There are some noticeable rust bubbles with the worst rot being on the right rear lower wheel opening. Again, the vast majority of exterior panels look to be in solid shape. I did my best to take as many pictures as possible to accurately show the overall condition of the car, I am only able to add so many pictures. I tried to choose the ones that best describe the condition. Please look them all over and don't hesitate to ask for any specific detailed photos, I'm sure I have them.

In short, it is in need of a full restoration but the pictures will speak for themselves, this is a great candidate for a top notch job and given the rarity could be quite valuable to a collector.

There are some new* parts that are not shown in pictures but will be included with the sale, they are:

New front and rear chrome bumpers

New chrome front exterior trim (around headlamps and grille)

New chrome wheel arch trim

New front (possibly rear as well) seat covers in the factory color/style

New floor carpet

New center console

There is also a used "rally" grille

The installed carburetor is not the original unit, the factory carb is available and will be included, it's condition is not yet known, will likely require a rebuild.

*NOTE: These parts have been stored in my father's garage attic and have not yet been taken down, so the condition is UNKNOWN.

Thanks for looking!

Correction: Statistics are based on total Convertible production numbers not total production, so instead of "out of 125,813 total production" it should be "out of 6,121 total convertible production"
