Description of 1969 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this 1969 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. The new-for-'69 Mustang body style inspired the front fenders and hood to be made of fiberglass and featured an extended nose with a completely different look than the Mustang. Also new for Shelby's was the much more simplified VIN number for '69 and '70 model years. In all, a total of 2,361 were built for the '69 model year. According to the Deluxe Marti Report, this example... looks to have been a Ford executive vehicle for a very brief time before it, as it's believed, was officially sold new at North Brothers Ford in Westland, MI. It is said that it is a 2-owner car with the second, and current, owner purchasing it in 1986. It underwent a complete restoration in 1994 by SRI Automotive in Au Gres, MI with photo documentation of the restoration. During the restoration, the original 428 Cobra Jet and C6 automatic were rebuilt and the engine still retains its original smog pump. According to the Marti Report, it came with the following options: sport deck rear seating, power steering, power front disc brakes, tilt-away steering wheel, Selectaire A/C, AM/FM stereo radio (not currently working), intermittent windshield wipers, tinted glass (still original), deluxe belts/warning lights, and a tachometer with trip. It was built on May 14th, 1969 two days ahead of schedule. It is 1 of 63 in Wimbledon White, 1 of 36 in Wimbledon White with Black Clarion knit/vinyl high bucket seats, 1 of 709 with the 428 Cobra Jet paired with a C6 automatic, and 1 of 1,866 with sport deck rear seats. Previous to 1968, Shelby vehicles were built at the LAX facility in Los Angeles, CA by Shelby American. Post 1968, Ford became heavily involved in the manufacturing of Shelby Mustangs and pushed it to become a mass producer of standardized cars instead of a specialty shop. Shelby production would now be overseen by the newly created Shelby Automotive, Inc. based in Livonia, MI and actual assembly was outsourced by Ford to A.O. Smith in Ionia, MI. All post 1968 Shelby's were built at Ford's Metuchen, NJ plant and shipped by rail to A.O. Smith for final assembly. Decoding the VIN reveals: • 9 = 1969 • F = Metuchen, NJ • 02 = Shelby 2-Door Fastback • R = 428 Cobra Jet 4v V8 Decoding the Door Tag reveals: • 63C = Shelby 2-Door Fastback • M5 = Wimbledon White • 3AA = Black Clarion Knit/Vinyl Hi-Back Bucket Seats • 16E = Scheduled for May 16th, 1969 Build Date • 842696 = Home Office Reserve Ordering District • 6 = 3.00 Rear-end • U = C6 Automatic
