Hitting the market in 1973, the all new Mustang II was a considerable change from its predecessor and was offered in notchback and fastback styles on a platform shared with the compact Pinto. Just three engine options were offered, a 2.3L I4, 2.8L V6, and a 4.9L V8. Due to the recent oil crisis, an emphasis was placed on fuel efficiency and a new "MPG" trim was introduced in 1975 that featured a taller 3.18 rear axle and a catalytic... converter that enabled it to score 23/34 city/highway MPG scores.
