Description of 1949 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight |
This 1949 Olds raced at Bonneville. El Mirage. and Muroc. Race years spanned a 6 yr period. It was built and driven by Ron Jolliffe. now an SCTA inspector. tarter. record holder. and tech advisor. Other than the narrowed rear end. wheels (American 8 1/2 rear 7 front). and tires. This car is as it was raced. It is now street driven. Head lights. Brake lights. Turn signals all functional. This car has had different engine and driveline configurations over it's time. The current power (not Olds) for the street is a GM 427ci 6/71 Blown . MSD ignition with boost retard. Engine built by Rocket Science Engineering from Hailey Idaho. It has 155 hours on it. see Pic's). Custom built Headers by Sanderson South San Francisco. In the rear is a Ford 9 inch narrowed to accommodate wider wheels and tires for street driving. Williams axles. coil over springs/shocks with massive adjustable panhard bar. A 19 gal aluminum fuel cell. battery and fuel pump in trunk area. Turbo 400/3000 stall. Cross flow radiator with both manual and electric fan . Front suspension is basically stock. frame modified for 12 degrees castor. which helps keep the car going straight. steering damper. dropped spindles. Shocks. bushings and other components were either replaced with new or rebuilt prior to racing. The engine sets back 6 inches from stock location. The interior is race busy with full roll cage. instrumentation. aluminum door and rear panels. ilton brake pedal and master cyl. The radio is non functional. Every piece of stock trim is on this car and has either been polished or re-chromed. All glass is clear. no separation. new window channels/whiskers. The number "1949" is the SCTA assigned number for competition. The concept was to have a street driven car that was just as it was on the salt. This is not a "show " car. although it is gorgeous. Most everything was done with function in mind. Clear California Title. currently registered. License plates are California Year of Manufacture and stay with the seller or could be negotiated. More pic's can be seen in Rodders Journals and Hot Rod Garages by Peter Vincent. A few things to note that bidders need to know. nothing major but FYI. Oil temp and speedo gauges are not wired up. They work. just need power to them. There are no windshield wipers on this car. I would recommend electric if it's an issue. Because of the castor modification to the frame. steering radius is slightly less than a stock car. Some minor play in the stock steering box (adjustment). This car represents a piece of salt flat race history and would be a fine addition to any collection. I have owned this car for 15yrs. I will be happy to assist your shipper in any way I can. Thank you for your interest and good bidding |
