Description of 1987 GMC Sierra 1500 Sierra Classic |
Offered here today is a unique 1987 GMC Sierra Classic 4x4. Everybody, as well as myself, wants a super original, low mile, one owner vehicle but a truth about them once you finally located and purchase one, it’s nothing more than a piece of art. Your afraid to drive it because you don’t want to put miles on it. Getting in and out of that 30 year old front seat soon shreds it. Because it’s never been used, as soon as you do try to take it out it begins leaking, needs something repaired or breaks down and leaves you stuck. Pretty soon, it’s not fun anymore and it sits. This particular truck was owned by a university out west for the past 30 years and has lived a sheltered life while being maintained on a strict schedule. If the truck needed something, it was repaired correctly and with AC Delco parts when available. With that said, the a/c functions correctly, the speedometer is spot on, the cruise control accurately holds your speed and the fuel tanks switch as they should. The factory automatic front hubs engage and disengage just as when it was new. All the emission equipment is intact and functioning as it should, it passed our local test for the past couple years without issue. A quick look under the hood reveals just about every maintenance part has been replaced or refurbished including the radiator, belts, hoses, water pump, complete a/c system, alternator, battery, starter, and tune up. Behind the factory rally wheels fitted with Goodyear Duratrac tires, it features serviced brakes, hardware, drums, rotors, calipers and wheel cylinders. We have cared for the truck about 2 years now and during this time we had it professionally refinished in it’s original factory black color along with a sprayed in bed liner. Once out of the paint booth, new trim, “New Old Stock” when practical, was installed. Fresh window rubbers and weatherstrips were added along with refreshing the interior as needed to bring it to a high standard. Having owned a couple of these over the years, a couple of minor upgrades were performed. Better headlamps including upgraded low beam lamps along with Hella H4 55 watt high beams and a later model blower motor to increase HVAC air flow and comfort here in AZ. The period correct Kenwood receiver was recently serviced and new 3 way Kenwood speakers were fitted to the factory mounting brackets behind the seat. Always a New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona truck, we have been using this vehicle as a daily driver during our brutal Phoenix summer. It runs at 195 degrees consistently and the a/c keeps up even at when it’s 115 out. It starts easily and drives well thanks to a recent service consisting of an oil change, tire balance and rotation along with a check of the front end alignment. The engine runs quiet with no unusual noises, no noticeable smoke from the tail pipe either when starting or while driving. The transmission shifts through its gears crisply and at the proper times. Due to the age of the truck, the miles on the title are exempt Once you have seen a number of these trucks over the years and have become familiar with them, one of the better known issues you should check would be the frame near the steering box, this truck’s is clean with no cracks, welds or previous repairs. Another issue are the shock mounts, these are tight and as they left the factory. This easy life at the university prevented it from falling into the secondary used vehicle market and into the hands of young adventures who typically would race through the woods or desert collecting “hold my beer and watch this!” memories. These young adventures would often add headers, dual exhaust or possible a lift kit and bigger tires along with the requisite Mexican blanket seat cover once it’s original got tattered, this truck has had none of these. It’s tough to bring them back once they have gone down that path and when you do, they usually have the scars to prove it. In closing, we have brought to market a well sorted classic truck that is practical and reliable enough for daily use.. We recently took it on a 16 hour round trip and a 6 hour round trip. There are a number of these trucks in the market today, many with their freshly painted exteriors and new seat covers, others are complete nut and bolt restorations, but the truth be told, I find it difficult to believe there is a better one out there right now at this price point. We welcome and suggest that either you or a third party inspect it to confirm it’s condition. We will provide as much additional information, as many additional pictures, or accommodate any inspectors needed to make you comfortable with this purchase.
