Description of 1963 GMC Other |
1963 GMC 1/2 Ton Short Bed Stepside I dragged this truck out of a barn 6 years ago with plans to restore it to original condition. Well, you know how plans change. The original V6 was really not a good candidate and the 3 speed manual transmission was not all that desirable. So, since I had a small block Chevy sitting in the corner of my shop and a 67 Chevelle rear axle from a parts car, I put out the word to my hot rod buddies in search of a Muncie 4 speed. While waiting for that to materialize, I pulled out the welder and added a couple patch panels to the sheet metal along with other body repairs. That and a couple quarts of epoxy primer was all it took to make the cab and bed presentable. It didn't take long to source a good Muncie M-21 and after a few modifications I had the rear axle ready for spring perches. A few machine shop weeks later the small block 350 with 4 bolt mains was refreshed and assembled and ready to add the goodies. For steering and suspension I sourced a 79 Chevy tilt column to couple to the original manual steering gear and with new front power disc brakes, bushings and ball joints the ole truck was ready for the road. A little more paint for the interior and a trip to the local upholstery shop resulted in a comfortable carpeted interior. 3 Years and multiple weekends of wrenching resulted in what you see in the pics. It's been a fun, reliable truck to drive but new challenges have presented an opportunity for other projects and it's time to pass the truck on to a new owner. QUESTIONS?
