Description of 1965 GMC Suburban Custom |
For sale: Ultra rare factory 4x4 1965 GMC Suburban Carryall 2 door barn find survivor, NO RESERVE. This truck was ordered new by a local doctor as a hunting, fishing, and camping rig for use in the arid mountains of central Montana, land of the sagebrush and prickly pear cactus. I purchased it from the third owner/caretaker, who owned it the last 25 years. Very original truck with factory chalk marks still on the cowl. Includes original manual and brochure, and a pile of receipts for work done going back three decades. Original key and it still locks all the doors. Bulletproof and torquey 305 V6, four speed and 3.54 gears. Capable of cruising at modern speeds on modern roads, unlike most of the trucks of this era with low tractor gears. It’s a working, running and driving truck that hasn’t been sitting fallow in a field. Set of tire chains included! Use as is out on the ranch or for Cars N Coffee, or take to the next level. I’ll do my best to describe this unique and special truck below, PLEASE see the Photobucket album and YouTube walk around video links at the bottom of the description. Exterior: Original paint with nice patina. Straight old truck with no major body damage, one repair with filler cracked off low on body near rear bumper on driver side. Small torn area on wheel lip of driver front fender. Truck has some of the typical rust of this era, but not the sitting-at-the-bottom-of-a-lake rot so often seen on these. Roads aren’t salted here, but we do see rust where mud packs in and holds moisture. Of course we don’t see frame rust out here in the arid west. Previous owner made some crude sheet metal repairs about 25 years ago to a few areas, PLEASE see additional detail pics at linked Photobucket album, everything is shown there including underside. Glass in good shape, windshield not cracked but has a small chip/scratch. Luggage rack is a catalog mail order item added by original doctor owner - there’s been more than one dandy buck hauled on it! And yes I know the front bumper is upside down - personal preference, I guess.
Interior: Mostly original in usable survivor condition. All gauges work (fuel gauge reads high), lights work including dash warning lights. Horn, wipers, heater, parking brake and aftermarket radio working. Previous owner added a PVC duct to pipe heat to the back seat for those November hunting trips, easily removed if desired. Also added some cup holders on dash and rear seat, and fishing rod holders mounted on inside roof, also easily removed - but I'd keep them. No rodent damage or smells, clean enough for even the wife to ride down to the Steak N Shake in.
Mechanical: Starts, runs, and drives. Brakes working and 4x4 works in both high and low range. No smoke or unusual noises. Great oil pressure. Torquey 305 V6 pulls strong, and with 3.54 gear it will cruise down the road. Clutch works fine. Gauges, lights, wipers, radio, heater, horn, parking brake all working. I took the truck to a professional mechanic for a complete check-up, he drained the gas, rebuilt the carb, and topped off all fluids. He said the engine is in very good condition, could probably adjust valve lash and do a complete tune-up if desired. There is an auxiliary fuel tank that’s currently disconnected, running off original main tank. Typical old 4x4 leaks but nothing horrible. Starter Bendix kicks out once in a while, will need replacement at some point. “Pie crust” bias ply traction tires on original 16" wheels have good tread but are old, I replaced all the tubes with new so they do hold air but will need replacement. I mounted up some radial tires off another rig and it drives fine with radials, there is some play in the steering gear. It is an old truck, and old trucks are not perfect and need work, so if you haven’t messed around with vintage trucks, adjust your expectations accordingly
Pricing/Misc: This truck is NO RESERVE and will sell. It runs and drives, but flying in and driving it home isn’t advisable as Montana is a huge state with many remote areas with no cell service or roadside assistance. Reasonable transport is available, I will drive truck to meet your transporter and help load it. Title is clear and in my name, buyer will need to get insurance upon purchase as I will cancel mine. Truck can stay here for 30 days, after that $100/month storage will be due.
