1975 GMC Astro 9500 Cab-Over Hauler Transporter Great History
I am pleased to offer this 1975 GMC Astro 9500 cab-over transporter which is a very unique vehicle with significant IMSA, POC, and vintage race history. The current owner purchased this truck from its previous owner in Southern California where it had spent its entire life to being driven cross country to Virginia where it now resides. VIN # is TDH925V568694. Details: Length: 38' Sleeping capacity: 3 Water capacity: 100 gallons Air conditioners/heat pumps: 1 Fuel type: diesel

Since the truck is used privately and registered as an RV, no CDL or special license is needed to drive it in Virginia. This is a full air brake system, so to be safe, please check your state’s regulations for licensing.

The history of this truck came from the previous owner with some documentation including a picture of the truck in the early 80’s at an IMSA event. This truck was originally built for Garretson Enterprises in Mountain View California as seen in one of the pictures listed in the late 1970’s / early 80’s, and was very active in the Porsche scene during that time. The truck was designed to fit inside of a conex shipping container that could be placed on a ship and shipped overseas with car / equipment packaged inside of the truck.

The truck was actively used until the mid-late 80’s where it was parked and sat for some time prior to purchase by another California Porsche POC champion Ron Mistak, and was used for years hauling Ron’s 914-6 cars up and down the coast of California to various events. While in Mistak’s possession, the box was redone and turned into half hauler and half RV. A stacker unit was placed in the garage area of the truck and currently holds an early RSR race car on the top stack and a Bugeye Sprite and 3-wheeler pit bike on the lower level.

There are both top and bottom stack winches mounted on the stacker unit. Current owner purchased this truck about 6 years ago and drove the truck from California to Virginia. The truck has since been inside in a heated shop unless it is on the road for an event.

The truck has a power ramp door in the rear and the hydraulic stacker lift works appropriately. The RV portion of the box consists of a full bathroom with a new toilet and full size shower. The bathroom has LED lighting and a vent fan, with a sliding door to separate the bathroom from the rest of the box for privacy. The kitchen consists of a double sink with countertop space and a two-burner propane cooktop. There is a refrigerator / freezer with a new control board that works appropriately and runs on propane or 110. The kitchen also has an above range microwave and lots of cabinet / storage space including a slide out pantry as shown in the pictures.

The living room area has a two person futon that folds out into a bed with a flat screen TV mounted above the entry door and a slide exterior window with screen. The truck has onboard propane that fuels the stovetop and a propane furnace with a new control board for cold nights that works extremely well, and also powers the water heater. Black tank and gray tank both have conventional RV pump outs in the outside lower compartment along with a fresh water tank or domestic water hookup. Water pump for the fresh tank is new. There is a combination of 12 volt and 110 volt lighting throughout the box and a variety of 110 volt outlets when on shore or generator power. There is a new Dometic low- profile heat pump mounted on the roof of the box that heats and cools nicely. Walls and ceiling are finished and insulated. There is an escape hatch ladder on the side wall that takes you to the roof. Roof is a one piece unit with no leaks and additional storage on top. The truck with the rooftop heat pump is 13’ 6” tall.

The exterior of the box consists of multiple belly storage compartments including an electrical compartment with panel box and onboard battery charger for the road tractor. This compartment includes a shore line connection for 220 volt connection when at the track or generator power. There is also a plumbing / pump-out compartment and connection for domestic water. Orange and red marker light lenses on the side and rear of the box have all been replaced.

The tractor is a 1975 all aluminum GMC Astro 9500 with an aluminum frame. It has a 8-71 Detroit with a 13 speed road ranger transmission. Original mileage is 227,259. Cab in in good shape. The three piece headliner needs the drivers side third put back up. Sleeper cab is used for storage with no mattress. Gauges have been replaced and work with the exception of the fuel gauge. A brand new air ride seat was installed two years ago and works nicely. There is an aftermarket 134 AC unit over the center box. Heat works great in the cab. Cab has external storage compartments that open appropriately. The truck has dual saddle tanks with crossover. It has standard bolt pattern Alcoa aluminum wheels and tires are in good shape. Owner changes the oil and filters every year even through the truck does not get driven more than 1,000 miles per year. Owner also added new belts on the motor.

You do not see these often, and in the vintage racing world the truck typically attracts more attention than the cars it hauls. Owner is only selling to purchase a tow vehicle that can sleep more people as kids get older and are taking an interest in coming to the tracks more. Owner wouldn’t hesitate to drive this truck anywhere and would not be selling if not for the need for more space. Rare opportunity to own a piece of IMSA, POC, and vintage racing history. Registered as a 1980 RV

Vehicle is titled with a clear Virginia title in the owners name.
