For sale: is a highly collectible. all original. 1970 Honda AN600 2-door sedan that has received a full restoration some years ago from the ground up on a solid. rust free. clean chassis. The car shows its age (45 years) well with an authentic patina and has been very well cared for and always garaged with Owner's handbook. Shop Technical manual etc and has won several awards at Car shows. Reason for sale: I am downsizing my micro-car collection due to shortage of garage space. time and age. Condition: This 1970 Honda AN600 is in MINT. showroom condition inside and out with no rust in under chassis. floor pans. rocker panels. doors. wheel wells. spare wheel carrier or anywhere other than noted in the Issues section of this ad. The car is an all original. showroom ready. gorgeous example of a very sought after Collectible grade early Honda that has been fully restored on a solid monocoque. accident free. rust free body with all the mechanical working parts (2 cylinder engine. 4 speed-manual. fully synchronized transmission. brakes. suspension. steering) having also been restored & is working very well. The car runs like a dream. pulls strong and smooth with excellent acceleration and compression in both cylinders. It is in exceptionally excellent condition both cosmetically and functionally and gleams in its period correct "Mustard yellow" paintwork and bright. shiny chrome trim. The car has original 46. 46 miles on the odometer and everything works perfectly: headlights in low & high beam. turn signal flasher lights. combo tail lights/ brake lights. hazard lights. 2 speed wipers. interior dome light. door-ajar buzzer. electric starter. alternator. parking lights. horn. windshield washer. hydraulic brakes (front discs. rear drums). emergency hand brake. side marker lights etc. All glass is in very good condition with perhaps an odd. imperceptible scratch here or there to a scrutinizing eye & consistent for its age. The door glass regulators are manually crank operated and work up/down without any issues. All rubber gaskets. rubber door seals. rear quarter glass seals. trunk seals. windshield glass seal. rear glass seal. rubber bushings in suspension. rubber tires are all in excellent condition with no dry rot or issues. Plenty of tread life remains in all the nearly new-like tires with spare tire also in good condition. The original AM/FM radio works and so does the telescopic radio antenna. The headliner is in excellent condition and so is the original upholstery/seats front & rear which are soft & supple vinyl with minimal wear-n-tear. clean carpet. floor mats etc. The driver's side seat has a "stress blemish" on the seat bottom as noted in the Issues section & is minor & correctable. The dashboard is clean and original with no cracks or issues and nothing is missing or marred with all switches. controls. buttons intact and working. The interior air flaps open/close. The interior heater works well using the heat exchanger in the engine compartment. The battery is also in excellent condition with all electrical items in working condition. A battery maintainer is always plugged to the battery and is included in the sale. The fuel gauge. speedometer. odometer. all work as designed with no issues. The original Kyoto brand headlights and Stanley tail lamps & side marker lamps are all in excellent condition. Everything in the engine compartment is original and in very good. working condition with no issues at all. The engine ticks over like a well oiled sewing machine when idling and has amazing power for a 2 cylinder. forced air cooled engine due to over sized pistons used during the restoration. Design features: In accordance with Honda's simplistic & minimalist design air-cooling eliminated the need for a radiator. anti freeze. hoses. thermostat. water jacket around cylinders and a water pump to keep its construction cost and weight down as well as reduces the cost of maintenance & improves reliability. A rubber belt runs off the crank shaft and bends 90 degrees by idler pulleys to turn a fan with 3 plastic blades in an aluminum housing behind the engine. The fan sucks air from the front to rear past the cylinder fins via 2 air ducts on either sides of the twin cylinder engine fins to cool the engine. This aids in cooling when car is standing still as well as driving. The entire engine and transmission is of all aluminum construction. The engine has Overhead valves and a timing chain in the middle of the over head cam shaft. There is no distributor and both spark plugs fire continually in unison. This simplifies the design and improves reliability. So when one cylinder is in the "Combustion stroke" or "Power stroke" the other cylinder is in the "Exhaust stroke". Hence a sparking plug can do no harm in the "Exhaust stroke" cylinder since gases have already been combusted. The 600 cc air cooled engine on this model was purpose built for marketing the Honda AN600 & AZ600 cars in the USA and was not borrowed from a Honda motorcycle as Honda did not make a 600 cc Honda motorcycle at that time period. Although much of Honda's engineering expertise derived from its superior technology in the field of motor cycle manufacturing and racing. The car was economical with about 60 - 70 mpg with 36 horsepower from a 2-cylinder. forced-air cooled. all aluminum motor that shares the engine oil to lubricate the integrated 4 speed manual transmission (for ease of maintenance and simplicity). The car is of front wheel drive design with vacuum servo-assisted hydraulic disc brakes in the front & drum brakes at the rear. MacPherson struts (coil springs over shocks) at the front & live axle with leaf springs & shocks at the rear for suspension. A plastic trunk lid saves on weight. Rack & pinion (non power assisted) steering provides good road feel and feedback for an enjoyable and safe driving experience. Needle bearings are used in the crank shaft (similar to race cars and motorcycles). It is interesting to note that the Acura NSX (Honda NSX in other countries) that debuted in1990 inherited some of its technology from the Honda 600s (20 years later). Only shows how ahead of it's time these little cars were and set the stage for Honda's success to follow. History: of the Honda AN600: In post world war Two Japan the Japanese government stipulated stringent "Kei car" (City car) regulations for car makers in Japan to produce a small. economical and affordable car to mobilize the people of Japan with an engine size no greater than 360 cubic centimeters (cc). Honda. Subaru and Mazda competed for the Kei car market and produced their respective cars for the domestic Japanese market. Honda made the Honda AN360 and AZ360. To take advantage of Honda's strong motorcycle sales in the USA Honda up-sized the 360 cc engine to 600 cc on the same chassis to sell the Honda AN600 through their motorcycle dealerships across the USA from around 1968- 1972 for about $1. 00/. General: A screw Jack & crank is stowed in the engine compartment (to save on space & better access. The spare wheel is in a carrier that drops down by turning a screw in the trunk. A Honda AN600 Owner's handbook. warranty book. Honda technical Shop manual. tool kit. some spare parts. battery maintainer and a duplicate set of keys are all included in the sale. The AN600 sedan and its brother the AZ600 coupe (not included in sale) share the exact same power train and mechanicals with different body styles and are both collectible grade as they represent the roots of Honda cars today by offering excellent engineering in a compact package that was built to last with excellent reliability & ease and economy of maintenance. The Honda AN600 here has a clear and marketable Title. The car had a recent engine oil & filter change (3. 5 quarts). The car has a new exhaust and muffler.
