Description of 1979 International Harvester Scout Terra |
This Terra is a family heirloom. My family bought it new back in 1978 (1979 year model manufactured in 1978) when I was just a kid, then reluctantly sold it in 1996. I found it and bought it back in 2008 (yes, true story). At that point, it was still completely original - it had been sitting under a tarp for several years - but the powertrain had quite a bit of wear and tear (the body and frame were still amazingly dent and rust-free). I had quite a bit of restoration work completed in 2013, and it has only been street-driven on weekends ever since. I have a lot of great memories associated with this truck - it is very difficult to let it go, but I just no longer have the time to care for it like I should. It does have some non-stock upgrades (ex. a 4" lift kit), but I have been very careful to not have the frame, body, or axles sawed/welded/modified in any way. In other words, the truck can easily be reverted to completely stock configuration - every upgrade has been a bolt-in replacement. I don't see too many Terras anymore. The Terra has a 118 inch wheelbase (18 inches longer than the Scout II), and a fiberglass Terra top (half top). The additional 18 inches are between the doors and rear wheels. The powertrain on this truck (345 V8 engine, T19 wide ratio 4-speed manual transmission, Dana 20 transfer case, driveshafts, Dana 44 axles, hubs) is stock. The original 345 engine was recently replaced with a working 345 with good oil pressure. When I purchased the truck in 2008, the speedometer was broken and had to be replaced, so the mileage shown in any pictures or videos is not accurate. Honestly, the mileage on the truck is unknown (I entered 999,999 in the Mileage field for this listing because I had to enter a numeric value). The Scout was professionally repainted the original IH Lexington Blue. The truck originally had the 1979 custom stripe (3-stripe) vinyl decals running along the sides. I do have a reproduction set of those decals that I will include with the truck, although I know there are people that prefer the larger Rallye style decals. I also have a pair of "Scout Terra" decals I will include, which would go in front of the rear marker lights. The underside was recently cleaned and repainted, and while some small rust spots in the floorboards and bed were replaced, no major work had to be done. The truck is very straight and solid. All body panels, doors, hood, and tailgate are factory sheet metal. It has a clear title in my name, has passed Texas state inspection and is registered in Texas. Features/upgrades:- Champion 3-row aluminum radiator (drop-in replacement for factory radiator, reuses factory mounting holes and fan shroud) - Replaced original International 345 V8 engine with used running 345 (factory spread bore intake with new Edelbrock 1406 carburetor). All seals on the 345 were replaced, and a remanufactured oil pump was installed. The engine compartment was cleaned up and repainted. The mileage on the 345 is unknown, but it runs well with good oil pressure. - Low-profile air filter, since the Edelbrock requires an adapter plate on the intake manifold. Carburetor options are available that can use the stock air filter, and I have the repainted original I will include with the truck. - Lokar throttle linkage (no modifications to mount - easily reverted to stock linkage) - Factory power steering (stock Saginaw gearbox and pump), except the factory rag joint was upgraded to a Borgeson joint - Hi-torque starter motor - RPT motor mounts and manual transmission mount (all drop-in replacements for the stock parts) - Straight steer brace - Factory brake system: disks in front, drums in rear, stock parking brake - Factory dash with factory gauges. The speedometer has been replaced and does not show the actual mileage, which is unknown. I did add a mechanical oil pressure gauge (which shows PSI) to supplement the stock electrical one (which does not). It is mounted under the dash using the factory dash mounting screws, and is easily removed. - Original Borg-Warner T19 Wide (granny low first gear) 4-speed manual transmission, rebuilt and repainted - New clutch - Original Dana 20 transfer case, rebuilt and repainted - Dana 44 front and rear axles, rebuilt and repainted - New 4 inch Rough Country lift kit and 5 inch shackles (bolt-in upgrades - no frame modifications, easy to revert to factory springs and shackles - I will include a set of factory shackles) - BF Goodrich All-Terrain TA KO 33 x 10.5 tires (minimal wear - less than 1500 miles), on restored (powder coated) International 15 x 8 white spoke wheels. I am also including a spare (same brand tire on same restored wheel). - New one inch (closest available to stock size) poly body mounts and bushings - Crysler PT Cruiser cloth bucket seats mounted on original factory bucket seat pedestals (easy to bolt factory buckets back in if desired) - New seat belts which reuse the factory seat belt mounting holes - Fiberglass Terra top (bedlined white) - 70s-style aftermarket roll bar (bedlined black) with top light mounts, that originally came with the truck - Bed is IH Lexington Blue tinted bedliner - Exterior professionally stripped to bare metal and repainted IH Lexington Blue - Interior is IH Lexington Blue tinted bedliner except for the factory steel door panels (black bedliner) - Factory chrome front and rear bumpers - Polk speakers mounted in the Terra top speaker holes (and vintage 1979 Sanyo cassette head unit installed - not working and not connected to power - for display only) - New polypropylene factory style 19 gallon gas tank (drop-in replacement for stock metal tank) with stock skid plate - Dual exhaust with two Walker Sound FX mufflers (stock exhaust manifolds) - Scout SSII-style black grille (I do have a 1979 factory style chrome plastic grille and headlight bezels that I will include with the truck) The terra top includes the dome light hardware and toggle switch, the cargo light hardware and all the internal wiring, but it is not connected to power and has not been tested. The power cable that runs to the top is coiled up under the dash. Here is a video that will hopefully give a better overall view of the truck. Note that the head unit shown during the driving sequence is not included with the truck. The Sanyo head unit described above is instead. I you are not able to view this, please send me a message. Serious bidders only, please. If you have a question about anything, please ask before bidding. Seller reserves the right to end this listing at any time. This truck has had some major cleanup and repair work, but I would not call it a complete restoration (i.e., it is not a frame-off restoration, and every bolt has not been turned). The paint job is very good, but I don't know that I would call it show quality. The original factory wiring is still in place and appears to work fine. There are some slow lubrication fluid leaks on the truck, although I have never seen any actively driven Scout that did not have any.
