Thanks for checking out my auction. Here is a great opportunity to own a piece of history with a very unique backstory. The facts in the documentation and history are a collector's dream that reads like a storybook. The details map out this vehicle's original build and history like very few can. This Scout IIwas originally ordered by Dr. Olsen on February 7, 1978 at Soden International Inc. in Ontario, Oregon. Please note the sticker from the original dealer on the tail gate. The original line sheet describes the vehicle as ordered by Dr. Olsen and bears his name on the bottom as built to his specifications. The shipment request was made to the Fort Wayne, Indiana plant on March 15, 1978 as shown in the documentation and "Charlie" was built on April 13th. Finally, on May 10, 1978 Dr. Olsen brought the brand new Scout home from the International dealership in Ontario, Oregon. The original purchase order is included with the sale and can be seen in the pictures below. Dr. Olsen fortunately kept many detailed original documents since new.The original line sheet bearing his name, original purchase order bearing his name, owners manual, warranty card, and additional documented history are included in the sale. It's truly AMAZING to see all of these little details that reflect the authenticity of this time capsule.
Charlie is a low mileage, untouched, rust free, survivor 1978 International Harvester Scout II. The mileage of 89K is ACTUAL and the top has NEVER BEEN OFF. I can't even begin to explain how difficult it is to find this clean of an example in this very original condition. Survivor is used loosely and frequently to describe many classics, but this one is the REAL DEAL!
Dr. Olsen had many wonderful years of fun experiences and many of those were shared in this Scout. Summer fishing vacations with the family were enjoyed by all. Sometimes they would tow a small boat to one of their favorite fishing holes. Just picture the family sitting around the camp fire admiring the Scout and early the next morning landing a nice fish. Cruising Oregon's back roads, hunting and fishing, hiking the trails, to Church on Sunday, and hauling the family to community events, this was their reliable carriage. The Scout was always kept out of the elements and under cover when not in use. The neighbor boy, Robbie, fell in love with the Scout and had dreams of owning one just like it some day. Dr. Olsen and Robbie were friends, knowing how much Robbie liked the Scout, he would let Robbie drive on the lane occasionally. Robbieidolized the Olsen's Scout, and in fact was the one to nickname him "Charlie". Little did he know then, that later he would get the opportunity to own the Scout. Robbie's parents remained next door neighbors to the Olsens all of those years. From time to time Robbie would check in on the coveted Scout and the neighbors when visiting his family over the holidays. Finally in 2002, Dr. Olsen offered to sell him the Scout. Without hesitation he jumped at the chance. During Robbie's ownership of the Scout in Salem Oregon, it was used very sparingly. Sunday drives and special events were the only times it left the garage. Recently, due to a major medical emergency priorities have changed. This is the only reason it became available for sale.
The Scout has been in Oregon since brand new and always kept under cover. This vehicle has been loved its entire life and been well cared for. Evidence of this is shown everywhere throughout the Scout. The climate in Oregon preserves vehicles especially if they are pampered over the years. We have a very mild climate in Oregon and do not salt our roads. This makes life long Oregon cars very desirable classics due to NO RUST!
The IH Scout was first introduced in 1960 and is what many say started the SUV evolution of today. Think about it, what early SUV was out there? Bronco? It came after the Scout in 1966. Blazer? Not produced until mid year 1969. Basically the only SUV type options available at that time was the Jeep cj, or maybe a Brady Bunch station wagon. The IH Scout was almost a decade ahead of the competition catering to the active outdoorsman crowd and producing a groundbreaking multipurpose utility vehicle. The Scout was a true marvel and transcendent for its era.
The exterior of "Charlie" is in great original condition. The original factory Embassy Gray paint has a great finish and shines/shows very well. There has never been any paint work done so there aresome chips, scratches, minor surface rust, and boo boos over the years. The paint on the top has some thin spots. Remember, a classic vehicle is only original once. This Scout has a straight, solid body with only minor imperfections as to be expected. It has been driven, and is very nice for 40 years old! (Lots of pictures for you to study and draw your own conclusion, please check out the pics) The door jams and hinges are amazingly clean and rust free. All of the original ID tags, engine compartment stickers and badges are present. The tailgate and jams are excellent. All of the body lines have fantastic uniformity, another rarity on any classic. Overall, the exterior looks really nice and truly gets a lot of attention. Recently, while visiting some friends that own a paint shop specializing in classic cars, they were amazed at the Scout and said that it belonged in a museum! Everyone just loves "Charlie".
The interior is in well preserved original condition as well. The dash is in very nice shape with a couple of minor cracks. The instrument cluster and gauge bezel all look amazing and everything works. All gauges work as they should. EVERY gauge light, courtesy light, turn signal indicator, high beam notification, dome light, etc. works! The heater works great in all positions. The exterior lights all work as does the windshield wipers. The original radio is working, and the dash has not been cut or modified ever. The flooring is the original vinyl showing only minor imperfections and is overall in excellent condition. The door panels are super nice. The headliner has a couple of minor cracks, but overall in very nice condition and well preserved. The seats have been redone at some point and were done very well matching the original parchment interior color. Seats are comfortable andfirm. It feels very much like a brand new 1978 when sitting inside of it!
Maybe most importantly, how does Charlie drive? This is the part that probably impresses me the most about this Scout. It is a one finger on the wheel kind of driver. Truly amazing! There is no pull to either side while cruising or braking. It has very tight and precise handling characteristics. The motor fires right up, runs very smooth, doesn't smoke, and has lots of torque. Overnight it will leave a couple of drops of oil, nothing major. Check out how tidy and sorted out the engine bay is. It has been meticulously detailed. The 4 speed transmission shifts smoothly through all of the gears. The desirable 3.73 gear ratio Dana 44 axles option give a great balance of torque and really nice road manners. The transfer case shifts through all of its positions smooth and the 4WD works great in both HI and LOW range.
The terms of the auction are really simple and it takes two people to complete a successful auction. I have spent a great deal of time to photograph and describe the overall condition of this amazing Scout. I am sure the winning bidder will be extremely happy with this purchase. That being said, please take the time to study the pictures and I would be happy to answer any questions before you bid. This is a 40 year old utilitarian type vehicle, and while very nice, it is a non restored, well preserved original piece of history that is sold as is. I am in Albany, Oregon and would be happy to show you the Scout in person, please give me a call if you would like to schedule a time to see it prior to bidding. I have contact information for a shipping company that I have used in the past with great results if you need help getting shipping quotes. The title is not in my name but has been properly released. The winning bidder will receive the title and bill of sale after full payment has been received. Winning bidder to contact me and pay $1000 deposit through paypal withing 24 hours of auction end, the remaining balance to be paid in full within 72 hours of auction end, prefer bank wire transfer. Bid with confidence on this time capsule survivor Scout, you will not be disappointed.
