Description of 1980 International Harvester Scout |
This is my 1980 International Harvester Scout Diesel Traveler with a Nissan sd 33t motor. It is not a Scout II (it has a 10" longer wheel base). Way more like an old school Suburban as far as interior room goes. I am begrudgingly listing this for sale as it is my favorite thing in the world. It drives like it is new, no drift, no BS. These vehicles just don't produce any real power, which I didn't really know before I got into this project. 101 hp with turbo, 4k plus pounds, you can do the math. It's more like a tractor than anything. It will go up the side of a mountain with the gearing. I had this redone as a daily driver that never became my daily driver. It was not a pebble beach restore by any means but this Scout is better than 99% of the garbage floating around for a 1980. The short story is that it just isn't being used enough. It had a frame off restore in 2011. Since then I have only managed to put about 1k miles on it. It has been garaged and driven regularly, just not any great distance. It has a few dings from being in the garage, gravity is not your friend when it comes to overhead storage. It was completely bed lined when it was redone and should last through the next nuclear war. It was sprayed with single stage paint before it was made popular by the boys and girls at Toyota and Subaru. So here is the laundry list of what else has been done. I will provide any info that I can. I am adding three videos for your review. One is a cold start (to prove that you can actually start these in sub zero temps), one is a walk around and one is me driving the scout and going through the gears and braking. I am not a dealership and there is in no way shape or form a warranty on this vehicle. You buy it, it's yours, period. Oh and yeah, it's used. -Body removed down to frame, taken to bare metal and everything above the frame was bed lined. Including the inside of the doors. Then resprayed with single stage desert tan and black. -All pumps and external accessories rebuilt including power steering, alternator, turbo, the power steering rack, new water pump-All brake lines and fuel lines were replaced -Brakes all the way around all replaced -Hubs rebuilt -Exhuast delete for the 90 degree bend right after the turbo -Egt gauge added -Fuel tank removed and cleaned -Motor redone about 3 years ago. Head sent to diesel cast out west. They made it a masterpiece. Filled all the cracked pre comb chambers and literally made a work of art out of the head. -Pistons, rings, bearings, all redone. Motor runs like a Swiss watch. It is a mechanical diesel so it will run until you cut its fuel supply off. -All injectors sent out and re calibrated -Dana 44's drained and filled -Tranny and transfer case have not been touched. Transfer case shifts a little rough but nothing major. Could probably use some springs but works a-ok. -You real scout people will notice the grill is from a 79. I hated the square grill but still have the original should you have any desire to return to normal. -High flow aftermarket radiator. Original fan shroud removed,(I do still have it) for room for the new radiator. I have run this in the dead of summer, it barely breaks a sweat. -Air Conditioner will be fully operational by the time you take delivery. Just ordered a new compressor and will be hooking that up in the near future. -All lights, turn signals work, for now. The harness is over 40 years old. I was going to do a painless harness just to update, up to you now. -Blower motor only works on high. Easy fix but I'm not messing with it. -I have changed the ignition so it starts in the cold North East. Added a Ford starter solenoid so all the power from the glow plug relay flows through the solenoid and not the relay. Also directly wired all glow plugs to the ignition. They are originally wired in series, I changed that to parallel. -A Racor marine fuel filter with a bowl heater was also added. This truck has two fuel filters so nothing can every get through. The bowl heater is a nice feature in the winter. -Full 48" led light bar on bumper, it's kinda like day light when it's on. Regular old school halogen head lights on these kind of blow.-Interior is in decent shape. The black upholstery is a heavy duty cover over all of the seats. I have never looked into taking them off. Although I do love the original plaid interiors, they are very expensive at this stage of the game. -Odyssey battery. It is getting up there in age at this point, but still starts strong. Battery is kept on a tender all the time, after the temp drops. -BFG All Terrains probably don't have 500 miles on them-Does have a trac-lok limited slip in the rear -Clutch was changed to the preferred non rattle trap that they come with. The name escapes me but I can find it out if you need to know. -All rubber gaskets done including the windshield. -The ignition key does not lock the doors. It will turn the cylinders, but they are not hooked up. It has never been an issue with me but if you are gonna be taking this where the doors need to be locked, it will be a minor issue. Beyond the list i have the center console, never a big fan but it's here, a full size spare(it is the same wheel as the others just not the same size). You would have to get a tire that matches the others so you could run the spare, and the square grill. I also have the original jack it just isn't mounted in the engine like it is supposed to be. Easily rectified with a few calls to my friends at the Scout Connection in Indiana. I also have a shit ton of receipts, thousands of dollars worth for all of the work. This is already way too long but they will come with the sale. Also have many more photos of restore and current. If you need to see some extra photos let me know.
