Description of 1988 Isuzu Trooper LS

DESCRIPTIONBought this 5-speed 4WD Trooper in June of 2012 from a guy who had just driven it back from Arizona: i. e. . ONLY MINOR SURFACE RUST. Did extensive disassembly. and bought many new parts for it (see list below). After much work. thought it was ready to start in July. but couldn't get it going. or figure out what was wrong with it. so had it towed to my mechanic’s garage. It wasn't until they had removed the cylinder head that they determined that the cylinders were damaged enough to prevent it from running correctly: couple gouges in cylinder #2 (probably from broken ring). rust-like damage where coolant might have been sitting in #3. and ALL the pistons seem to have too much play. So the engine will need to be rebuilt or replaced. I truly believe you couldn't find another Trooper anywhere in the northeast. or maybe anywhere. that has less rust or a more solid body: anyone familiar with these Troopers will marvel at how solid the body is. and what great shape the interior is in. The only thing left on most Troopers in the northeast from this era are the tires: they had serious rust issues. It's lack of rust is the main reason I bought it and put so much work into it. - Interior is in great shape: removed. laundered and reinstalled the upholstery on all seating. Removed and pressure-washed all the carpeting. and replaced the matting under the carpets with sound/thermal insulation. - Paint is two-tone. white over gold: some of the gold color was burnt out of the paint by the Arizona sun. -NOTE: what looks like rust along the bottom of the doors and along the rocker panels is only dirt that splashed up onto it when it rained. I installed these parts new: - Cylinder head (newly cast. not rebuilt) - Cylinder head gasket - Timing belt - Timing belt tensioner - Distributor cap & rotor - Spark plugs - Spark plug wires - Ignition Control Unit ("igniter") - Coil - Battery - Starter - Water pump - All 4 belts (fan. alternator/air pump. AC. and PS) - Fuel pump - Fuel filter - Oil filter (synthetic oil used) - Air filter - Oxygen sensor - Intake manifold gasket - Throttle body gasket - Throttle body heater hoses - Camshaft seal - Valve cover gasket - Crankshaft seal - Radiator - Upper & lower radiator hoses - Thermostat & gasket - All heater hoses - IAC valve connector - Fuel injector connectors - Fuel injector seals - One new fuel injector - Engine mounts - Exhaust manifold gasket - Exhaust flex pipe - Muffler - EGR valve gasket - PCV valve - Power steering pump - Coolant temperature sensor (for warning light) - Coolant temperature sender (for gauge) - Thermal valve - Thermal vacuum valve & connector - Several vacuum hoses- Set of locking lug nuts - Other new parts included. but not installed: - L&R front drive axles - Front and rear shocks - Upper and lower front ball joints - L&R tie rod ends - Brake master cylinder - Air and oil filters - Leaf spring bushings - Valve cover seal and bushings - Aftermarket power lock kit - Aftermarket power window kit - Aftermarket coolant temperature gauge w/adapter for hose - Oil drain plug copper washers - Set of valve stem and camshaft seals - Various gaskets - 3 shop manuals (2 Isuzu. 1 Haynes) - Windshield seal - Spare tire cover- Dash mat - Has air conditioning and cruise control. both of which were working when disassembly began. - I removed the spare tire mounting bracket from the back door. but it's included (along with the spare tire itself). Bracket and spare will be mounted before pick-up. Specialized socket for bracket bolts will be included. Other issues: - Interior lights don't work with doors - Cut hole in cargo area (about 8"x8") to access top of tank when fuel pump was replaced. - Rear spoiler is included. but is not installed This Trooper and another $1k replacing the motor will have you driving a vehicle for years that's renowned for its simplicity and functionality.
