I have a 1978 Jeep CJ5 that was made for military use. It has the original grill with the holes for the headlight guards, original hardtop and doors. The roofrack is gone and the holes have been siliconed up. This Jeep is ready to go as is or it would be a perfect restoration project. The frame is perfect with no rust. It runs perfect, shifts easy with a strong clutch. Disc brakes on the front and drums on the rear that work as they should. Transfer case is smooth also. 44,722 original miles on this Jeep. Miles may go up some as I drive it every week. The Jeep has had both front floor pans replaced. Rust is minimal on this Jeep with the doors being the worst. It has some at the bottom of the tailgate also. Please look at all the pics. Rocker panels, tub supports, windshield frame are all solid. It does have a spot on the drivers side fender.(see pics) I replaced the plugs, battery, starter, solenoid, fuel filter and lines at the carburetor to get the Jeep running smooth. It just passed Virginia state inspection. All gauges work, heater works, wipers work, all lights also. You can literally drive this Jeep home if you want. Steering is tight, brakes are good and seat belts are in the Jeep. It was built for Military use and was originally white. It did not have a roll bar in it from the factory, but I have one if the winning bidder wants it. It also didn't have any fender flares from the factory. The following paragraph is from another owner of one of these Jeeps: They are rare because they were built by Jeep for the Govt. To Govt specs. They're one of the last Govt jeeps to be contracted for military use. Mine was used on a base in Alabama first by the US Army then by the army national guard. The Army National Guard painted to off white it is now during the first gulf war. Mine has the data plates and warranty sticker from Jeep to the forward operating base that received the jeep which is neat to read. I've tried looking online for any more info but they are so rare that there weren't many made and therefore people just don't know much about them. If you find anything else in your search let me know and I'll do the same. But you have something in my opinion that is not just another jeep cj5. What that means in money I'll leave up to you but I've been offered 11,000 for mine. Like yours my paint isn't great but it's very solid and all it would take is paint to shape mine up in a hurry. We have a sub model built by jeep and were some of the last to be used as military jeeps. After jeep was bought out by a foreign company they couldn't build jeeps for the US Govt anymore. The US Govt instead of having a total jeep built from scratch like the previous models like the M38, and M38-A1. They just had jeep change certain aspects of a regular run of jeeps on the line to there specs is how I understand it. So that's why it has civilian markings and military ones. It's totally strange and is why there is so little talked about. I don't people have paid much attention to these rare jeeps and they have flown under the radar. I did the same. That's what's weird about them. Mine has both cj5 standard vin but also has military stencils, data plates, and mine jeep was bought at a Govt auction by the 1st public owner. Some when you type in the vin it will only show civilian info. But there are subtle differences between the standard cj5 and the Govt contracted built ones like ours. That late in the 70's jeep was being phased out because amc was bought be Renault a foreign company. They couldn't continue to build jeeps after that. The were a sub model of regular cj5's specific for Govt use built. Oh yeah that's a jeep special equipment hard top and doors. Your jeep would also not come with a roll bar like mine. Yours looks pretty complete. Don't ever lose the windshield corner pieces to your top. I had to call all over the US looking for them. I found one set. The whole top is also very rare. Having the title "Jeep special equipment". It was the only thing missing from mine the corner pieces. Now it's 100 % complete. Can easily restore to all original. That's what I'm doing with mine now. It drives like a dream. Every time I drove I said why the Hell am I selling this awesome Jeep. So no I'm not. There's maybe only a handful now. Hey I just wanted you to know what you have. It's not a renegade. It's a U.S Govt. Contracted jeep built by amc for possibly military use. I have a 79 model. The three threaded holes in the grill would have headlight guards bolted there and the tow hooks on the bumper and the double wrapped heavy duty leaf springs are tell tell signs of this rare jeep. It needs some love but is way cooler than just a regular cj5.
