Description of 1973 Jeep CJ |
CJ5X2 1973 CJ5 "X2" Four-Door Jeep (CJ5 "X2") This is a custom four-door CJ5. It is the only CJ5 of this type on Earth. Pics are from 8/17/18. I took extra effort to show the worst parts. I also included 2 pictures from the build. Contact me for more. The Jeep was built using all CJ5 parts. The front door is modeled off of a CJ7. The rear door is modeled off of a CJ5. The bed is extended to the length of a CJ6 or CJ8 Scrambler. The frame is stretched 36 inches in the middle and 14 inches behind the rear axle. The frame was boxed from the front to the rear spring perches. It has Dana 30 and Dana 44 axles (both are open diffs). The transfer case is a Dana 20. The transmission is a 3 speed. I believe it is a T150. The engine is an AMC 360 from a 1972 Wagoneer. It was rebuilt about 20,000 miles ago. It was bored over. The crank was turned. It got all new bearings, new pistons, new valve guides, and hardened seats. It has an RV cam, an Edelbrock SP2P low rise dual plane intake, and a Holley Street Avenger 570cfm double pumper carb. Skip White electronic ignition/distributor. Warn 8274 Winch. Heavy duty steel front fenders. (Matching Rescue Green CJ5 OEM fenders also included.) Rear corner guards. The motor has more than enough power for a vehicle this size. The Jeep was built in 2009. It got all new floors. Some minimal rust on tailgate and where scratches have exposed metal. The color is Rescue Green from a 2008-2009 Wrangler. The seats are from Bestop. Aluminum Outlaw 1 Wheels. Advance Adapter Windshield clamps. Mile Marker locking hubs. The seat belts were new in 2009. It has a super thick aluminum radiator, with proper cowl and extra electric fan, power steering, and front disk brakes. It has a 20-gallon gas tank from an 86 CJ7. The tires are 33 10.50 15 BFG Mud T/A KM2. The fronts have about 10k miles on them and the rears have about 5k. I have no idea how many miles are on the Jeep. It has about 20k since built. Almost everything was replaced at that time. The tub and bed have bed liner throughout. The leaf springs were upgraded to the wider springs from a 76 model CJ7. It has front sway bar mounted on the frame, with new rod ends and bushings. Includes primitive top and doors which haven't been used since 2012. This Jeep was a daily driver for almost 3 years in Texas after being built. Then it moved to NJ where it has lived in a garage and gotten only occasional use in the summers - never for four-wheeling. It draws a crowd everywhere you go. You can't buy gas or go into Home Depot without someone stopping you to talk about it. The four-wheel-drive works fine. The roll cage was extended in the rear so that two adults can stand up in the bed and be supported by the cage. The second row of seats has plenty of leg room for two adults. It is also kid friendly. It has been a kid transport since built, and kids love to ride in it. Will easily accommodateadditional jump seats in the back for upto 4 additional passengers. I was considering the Little Passengers jump seats made for JKs. Negative issues: - Normal dings and rock chips and scratches that you would expect from a driver. There is one good dent in the left rear fender well and some paint issues with clear coat. See pics. - The speedometer isn't hooked up. - Horn not connected. - Right side headlight only working on high beam at the moment. Extra headlights, and lots of toggle switches and relays included. - It will pop out of reverse, but backing up slowly prevents it from happening. - The transfer case shifter could use new bushings, but it shifts fine for me, so I don't worry about it. - It has a top and doors that need recovering. The Build Designed and built in 2009 by Jester Customs in Texas... - Started with two 73 CJ5s and two CJ5 rolling chassis. - The sides were cut off of the two bodies and away from the firewall. Then the body sides were pieced together on the bench and welded into shape. - The front doors are square like a CJ7 and the rear doors have cutouts like a CJ5. The front doors are made from the front half of CJ5 doors where they meet the firewall. - The floors, transmission tunnel, and wheel tubs were made from scratch. They are all made from 18 gauge sheet steel including rolled beads. - The floor supports and associated hat channel are sheet metal welded it to the floor. - The underside and floors all got two coats of Tractor Supply implement paint before going to the body shop. - The frame was made by cutting the two in half and joining them in the middle. - Jim Markum in Ennis, TX did the body work and paint. - The color is Rescue Green. It is a factory Jeep color for 0708 Wranglers. - The way that the body was tied down caused it to bend just above the LR fender well and put a big wrinkle in the body and paint. - The roll cage is made from schedule 40 steel tubing bent with a hydraulic pipe bender with grab bars and the same paint used on the floors.
