Description of 1968 Lamborghini 400GT |
Lamborghini 400GT 2+2. This 1968 Lamborghini 400GT is a matching-numbers example finished in its original color combination of Grigio Saint Vincent over a Tobacco interior. Delivered new to New York City, this is production #244 of 247 examples built worldwide between 1966-68, putting it within the final 10 examples produced. In the 1990s, the car was acquired by the Rombauer Vineyard Collection and moved to Saint Helena, California, where it was kept until the selling dealer’s acquisition in February 2019. Mr. Rombauer drove the car approximately 2,300 miles before his passing in 2018, and the car shows 73,400 miles at the time it was sold to the current owner in Los Angeles where it underwent a fairly extensive restoration including a motor rebuild and new interior as is described below. It currently has approx. 750 miles on the new motor. The 400GT was introduced at the 1966 Geneva Auto Show as the successor to Lamborghini’s first model, the 350GT. The new model featured increased engine displacement to four liters, putting out an impressive 320 horsepower when new. It kept the same wheelbase but was revised with a 2+2 interior configuration, quad headlights, lowered floor pan and raised roof. Carrozzeria Marazzi handled coachwork on the last ~50 or so 400GTs produced, after Carrozzeria Touring closed its doors. Chassis #01339 is listed in the 400GT registry as production #244 of 250, and was originally delivered to New York before its delivery to the west. This particular example was repainted years ago in its original color of Grigio Saint Vincent. The seller has highlighted cosmetic imperfections in the photo gallery below. Power comes from the original but newly rebuilt, matching numbers, 3,929cc DOHC V12 with six newly rebuilt Weber 40 DCOE carburetors paired to a factory five-speed manual gearbox. Output was 320 horsepower at 6,500 rpm when new, with power sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed gearbox. Mechanical work in 2019 consisted of a new battery, voltage regulator, cooling hoses, new spark plugs, ignition wires, various fluids/filters, new wiper blades, and heater hoses. The alternator was refurbished, the radiator was re-cored, the oil cooler was restored, and the carburetors were tuned. In 2020, the vehicle was taken by the current owner to GTO Engineering in Beverly Hills where it underwent an extensive and complete engine, valve and carburetor rebuild totaling over 85,000.USD. Engine #1606 matches the engine bay data plaque shown in the gallery as correct for this chassis. Additional work includes; rebuilt alternator, front-end alignment, new fuel pump and filter, new manifold, new leather engine heat shield against firewall, restored and repainted air filter, many metal engine components restored including powder coating of valve covers, and much more. Motor was also recently detailed. The interior was roughly 80% restored, with original Tobacco upholstery as shown in photos. The seller preserved the side door and quarter panel inserts, and transmission hump in its original pigskin leather Most other leather was replaced with matching leather or Italian vinyl as required. Floorboards were restored and refitted and new light grey carpet with tobacco piping was installed. New Dashboard cover and face was installed and switches and instruments restored as needed including a new Lamborghini Steering Wheel Emblem. Original Securit glass markings can be seen in the gallery. New electric motors installed for the driver and passenger windows. Chrome 15″ Borrani knock-off wire wheels were recently disassembled and polished by Valley Wheels in Van Nuys, CA, then mounted with new 215/70 series Pirelli Cinturato tires and tubes, and the rear suspension coilovers were also replaced. A spare Borrani wheel and tire are present in the trunk compartment as shown in the gallery. The 400GT utilizes four-wheel Girling disc brakes, and the system was serviced in 2019 with new hoses, rebuilt/sleeved/restored tandem Girling master cylinders and calipers, along with new fluid. Metal outside trim and accents were sent out for polishing at Angel’s Polishing in LA. Custom Calico ‘Coco’ mats protect the carpets, while a period Borletti air conditioning system was been added on the passenger side of the dashboard but recently removed during the new interior work. It is available with the vehicle and can be re-installed but will require a new compressor. Records, receipts and further pics available upon request. |
