Description of 1990 Land Rover Defender

I'm selling my 1990 Land Rover Defender 90. It's scruffy looking, however most people actually comment on this saying that it gives it a cool, rugged looking patina. It also has the added benefit that you can use it off road (what it is designed for) without fear of damaging the bodywork. These Land Rovers make the best off-road vehicles with permanent 4-wheel drive, a low range transmission, excellent wheel articulation and a diesel engine for good torque at low speeds. Much better than a Jeep, Bronco or Land Cruiser.
I bought this Land Rover 2 years ago from a friend for occasional off road use, however I never got around to using it much and it has mostly been in dry storage. Space limitations mean that it is time to sell it. It has been well maintained and drives really nicely. I drove it 190 miles last week from where it had been stored to New York City with no problems at all. You really can jump into it and drive it anywhere. I've owned a few old Land Rovers and can safely say this is a good one. The steering is reasonably accurate and it is a pleasure to drive. It drives much better than it looks.
As it is imported from the UK Ebay doesn't recognize the Vin. It is SALLDVBB7FA454725.
The engine is the 19J Diesel Turbo which is reliable and economical, returning 30 mpg. It starts instantly and runs smoothly. The transmission is the LT77 5-Speed manual which shifts smoothly, mated to the LT230 transfer box which has both high range and low range gearing and a locking differential. The clutch is strong and engages cleanly. The UJ's on the prop-shafts are tight with no-slack and are well greased. The axles are quiet with no wear related noises. It has coil springs giving it a comfortable and compliant ride as opposed to the earlier Land Rovers which had leaf springs. The front brakes are discs and the rear brakes are drums. The wheels are steel modular items fitted with over size off road tires. The tires are in good condition with plenty of tread left on them.
The body is all original and shows 26 years of bumps, lumps and scrapes. The blue paint is faded on the upper surfaces giving it a good weathered patina. Some of the door and window seals have seen better days and are in need of replacement. The bulkhead is solid. It has some small welded repairs which have been completed in the drivers footwell, however the top corners under the windscreen hinges are solid, which is a notorious rust spot on these Land Rovers. The door frames have started to corrode at the bottom edges and will need attention at some point. The rest of the body panels are Aluminum and are in good shape. The chassis is solid with no major corrosion, the outriggers and rear cross member are also in good shape. The chassis has a covering of surface corrosion and grime as would be expected for a vehicle of this age.
The interior can best be described as scruffy. It is the County Station Wagon so had more trim and sound insulation, including the head liner. The seats are grey cloth and are past their best, the foam seat cushion has started to dissolve to dust leaving the seat cushion somewhat flat and deflated in appearance. The door trims are dented and torn and the interior door lock button is missing from the drivers door. The rear seats are in good condition. The electrics on these are very simple on these and everything works apart from the Fuel Gauge, I suspect this is just a loose wire so hopefully I will have it fixed by the time you read this.
The Land Rover is currently titled and registered in New York and is insured so test driving is not a problem.
Please keep in mind that this Land Rover is Right Hand Drive and manual shift so not the easiest thing in the world to drive.
I live in Manhattan, however the Land Rover is in Storage in Bergenfield, NJ. If you would like to view and test drive the Land Rover this can be done at the weekends only.
Priced to sell.
Happy bidding.
