Description of 1948 Lincoln Continental |
This was the last year of this body style. This was a very expensive car when sold new. As a result, nly 452 Convertibles were made. How many can there be left? This car has been modified. In the late 50's/early 60's, he sluggish Lincoln V12 was removed and a very powerful Cadillac 331 V8 was installed. Now there is power, orque, eliability and a great exhaust tone! Like it or not, his was a common engine swap that greatly improved the drivability of a V12 powered Lincoln. The color was also changed. This car was originally Grotto Blue. It is now black. The cloth top was replaced with a 60's vintage vinyl material. Obviously both can be corrected is so desired. This car has never been rusty. The frame, loors, loor supports, nner rocker panels, runk floor and body panels are all very solid. The only rust was a hole in the driver's floor that was patched. The chrome is actually in decent condition. It is not show quality, ut it is certainly of driver quality. All the glass is good. The original mirrors are in place. The top should be replaced, s a seam has let loose and the material is shrunk. A new top of the correct material can be installed for $1800 total. Also, he carpet is incorrect. New correct appearing carpet can be installed for a total of $400. But why do so if you wish to drive the car? If restoration is your goal, hen by all means... The 331 Cadillac was installed using an adapter and motor mounts/brackets that came as a kit. They were readily available including through the JC Whitney catalog. The engine starts and runs great. The clutch works good. The transmission shifts properly. The brakes work properly. Tube style shocks were installed so the ride and handling have been improved. There are two six volt batteries. This car is set up with a 6/12 dual voltage system. Twelve volts to power the starter, hen 6 volts once the starter is disengaged. It works great. It is charged by a six volt alternator. The power windows and power top are actuated by a hydraulic pumping system that was recently rebuilt. Both the windows and the top function. In addition, he wipers work, he horn blows and the radio plays. There is one marker/directional light not working. The heater is disconnected. The overdrive is not working. I know it to be electrical, ut just haven't taken time to address the situation. This is a rare car. It is a fun car to drive. While not all original, t offers great potential as a fun car or one for restoration. At this price, t is certainly a bargain. |
