For the 1981 model year, the Lincoln Continental Town Car was renamed the Lincoln Town Car as a stand-alone model line. Largely similar to its 1980 Lincoln Continental counterpart, the 1981 Lincoln Town Car retained two-door and four-door configurations. After slow sales, the Town Car two-door ended production for 1982. For the 1985 model year, the Cadillac Sedan de Ville and Fleetwood, traditional competitors of the Lincoln Town Car, shifted to front-wheel drive platforms, becoming smaller than the Lincoln. At the time, Lincoln marketed the larger size of the Town Car as a selling point.
