Description of 1988 Mazda RX-7 Convertible

If you're in the market for an RX-7 convertible, this is the car for you! Why? Because it's in great shape, and the reserve price is very reasonable. It's not perfect (see photos), but it is a fun car that you can enjoy immediately, and return to perfect status at your leisure. These cars are on their way to becoming collectible. Most RX-7s you come across in this age range have been abused (stanced, thrashed, and trashed). This car, aside from the 944 seats that have been installed, is original. It runs well and drives great.
This 7 comes with all the conveniences you'd want in a car of this era: power top, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, cruise control, cold AC, AM/FM CD, and power steering. All of it works. The convertible top is like new, with no tears or scratches. What's cool about these convertibles is that they have a removable targa panel, adding to the uniqueness that the RX-7 offered. There's also a factory wind blocker, which helps keep turbulence to a minimum on the open road when the top is down. Yes - Mazda was the first to introduce that feature in a convertible.
Mechanically, the car is solid. She runs very well and drives even better. At 70 mph, it's as smooth and steady on the road as any current convertible out there. There is a slight oil leak somewhere at the front of the engine, but it is not major. A drip here and there. It's not presented a problem, and since I didn't plan on keeping the car too long, I saw no need to address it. Another issue that is common to these cars is the oil pressure gauge. It's reading inaccurately, and the likely cause is a short in the wire from the sending unit to the gauge itself. I had the sender replaced to see if that was the culprit, but it wasn't. I have manually checked the oil pressure and it is spot on. This can be done by measuring the ohms at the sending unit, via a digital multi-meter. According to Mazda's figures, she's putting out around 40 psi at idle. All the other gauges are working as they should. The temp never reaches above 1/4. The shifts are nice and smooth, no clanging or grinding going on. The clutch is like butter, and the brakes stop the car promptly and smoothly.
The body is in very good shape. I don't rate it as excellent because there are a couple of minor panel dings on the car. You should be able to see those in the photos. Also, the car could stand a new paint job. From a short distance, she's a looker, but as you stand over it, you can see some imperfections. Hey...it's 30 years old...what do you expect? The driver's side door and front fender were repainted at some point, and whoever did it didn't do a stellar job. The shade of red is slightly off, but not drastic. The wheels on this car are flawless. That is a miracle. There's not the slightest bit of curb rash. It's hard to find these wheels in such good shape. The tires have lots of life left in them. A quick note on the stereo - it works just fine, but only the speakers under the dash are working. When I drive the car, I enjoy listening to the sound of the engine, so the music wasn't a priority.
Why am I selling the car? I saw something else I want. It's really that simple. This car is the 46th I've owned, and I'm 46 years old. One for each year, and I'm looking to get ahead in the game. I'm a car junkie. My goal is to own as many different cars as I can, so I can enjoy all the variety that's out there. This car is a lot of fun. It's no drag racer, but the handling is incredible. It's at home in the twisties, and if you understand the fact that this car comes alive between 4k and 7k RPMs, you'll have just as much fun with it. You can very easily restore this thing to like new, but you can jump in right now and enjoy. If you are looking for a perfect car, this isn't it. You can find those for anywhere between $8,000 and $13,000. Or, you can snag this one for less and have a blast. It's up to you.
