Description of 1971 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 280 SL |
After an enormously successful decade of race victories and production car sales success, ercedes-Benz decide to launch a brand new SL model to replace the 190 and the 300. Unveiled at the March 1963 Geneva Motor Show, ercedes-Benz launched the 230SL Coupe/Roadster with a standard removable hardtop and stoway canvas soft top. A distinct concave hardtop was designed for the car and lead way to the nickname “The Pagoda SL”. In 1967 Mercedes-Benz introduced the 250SL with a slight increase in horsepower, tiffer suspension and new rear disc brakes. In December of 1967 Mercedes once again unveiled an improved W113 SL, he 280SL. This time with an increased engine to 2.8 litres and 170hp. The 280SL was built for model year 1968-1971 and of the 23,885 built, nly half came to the United States. The 280SL has become an iconic classic in the motoring world and has shown over the past few years’ excellent investment potential. European Motor Studio is proud to offer this beautiful 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Roadster finished in Papyrus White over Navy Blue MB Tex. This 280SL left the Mercedes-Benz Stuttgart factory in December of 1970 and was then invoiced to North America. The car sold new to its first owner in Southern CA and still retains its original Blue Plates and covering a believed correct 72,250 miles from new. Coming out of a long term ownership this beautiful Papyrus White 280SL has recently undergone a beautiful cosmetic restoration in its original factory colors. Verified by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center this car retains its original engine it was born with and wears its original color combination and factory air. The original weld spots in the inner fenders are visible and the car retains its origina numbers matching rear convertible top boot. The body was disassembled and stripped and most rubber items have been replaced. The interior wears new German loop carpet and new MB Tex along with new satin wood trim all correct factory parts. The German softop is newer and is the correct Blue. The chrome shows very well with some very light pitting in some small areas. The straight six engine starts right up and idles smoothly and freely without any hesitation or smoke. The transmission shifts into gear without any issues and shifts through the gears without any problems. All of the electrical equipment on the car are in proper working order including all of the dash lights and glove compartment light. Even the shifter light is still operating. The suspension is nice and tight and free from any noises and the brakes and steering are all tight and solid. The engine has recently undergone a thorough tune including plugs and wires and all fluids. Recent work on the fuel injection systems has also been carried out. This is an excellent solid 71 280SL that can be enjoyed and driven. There is no visible rust anywhere on the car and the undercarriage looks very clean and tidy. Looking at the car top to bottom I do not see any signs of accident damage or repair work. This is an excellent running and driving 280SL that has just undergone an extensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration.
