My Loss is Your Gain on this very solid and straight Heckflosse, s it has a great bones and a super start towards your perfect restoration project that you can buy today for less than half my Total costs(purchase price, arts and labor). This Vintage Finn-Type(Heckflosse)Diesel was purchased by me about 4 years ago from an older gentleman from Georgia were I believe that it spent the majority of it's life. The last 4 photos in my group depicts it prior to my purchase, rans-port and extensive "mechanical restoration" of it by my mechanic. It was UN-running and most likely sitting outside neglected for a number of years(thus the algae/green moss on the body) prior to the original owner offering it for sale because he was relocating to the Chicago area. He told me that all it needed was a starter and that a local repair shop had "put a clutch in it" and the starter was lost or never re-installed??? Well when an experienced Northern Mercedes-Benz mechanic installed my newly purchased starter($300.00 plus 100.00 core charge for lost starter) it promptly made a grinding noise, bang and snapped of the cast iron nose cone off the Unit, hen we new we had a much bigger and costly problem(S)! :( It was apparent that the previously done work was sub-standard to say the least. So thus we embarked on a process of repair, pdate and restoration of everything mechanical prior to worrying about any cosmetic issues! Items that have already been fixed, pdated, epaired and or restored:-Drive Train Repairs: R&R transmission, lywheel and clutch and replace all components with New Old Stock Items including a Fichel & Sachs 228mm Pressure Plate, riction Disc, n FAG Throw-Out Bearing, earing Hub, earing Fork, n ATE Clutch Slave Cylinder, lutch Master Cylinder and Hydraulic Fluid Hose. Also changed to the Correct weight Oils in transmission and the rear end differential, lso replaced any related mounts, ubber front flex disc and center support bearing. The correct 228mm Flywheel was properly "Step-Cut"at a Euro knowledgeable machine shop. Also another New Old Stock BOSCH Re-manufactured SR60X Starter and Solenoid, great used Clutch Bearing Fork was installed with all new bolts, ashers and hardware. We learned that these 200D models could be ordered with a "Limo/HD Taxi" clutch option(228mm vs 200mm in diameter)which we have in ours and the previous repair shop used all the wrong size parts/stuff and they installed junk yard/used parts/stuff to boot while installing the wrong clutch bearing hub. An inspection view hole/plate was machined into the bottom of the Transmission bell housing for future viewing in the event of problems-Doubtful as it has been fixed RIGHT with the proverbial "open-checkbook! I stopped counting on this phase, ut over a $2,750.00 plus expense with parts and labor that had not been previously expected! :( -Cooling System Repairs: New Old Stock West Germany made Behr Water Pump, an Clutch, adiator Cap and Whaler Thermostat, ith fresh gaskets, ubber Original Equipment Hoses and Napa Belts. Engine and radiator steamed, leaned and flushed and checked for leaks. We are now ready for another 40 years of efficient cooling even in the hottest climate. :) -Engine Service: We Started with all new fluids and filters and then moved to a comprehensive Valve Adjustment with new Valve Cover Gasket. Re- manufactured injectors were installed along with brand new Bosch Glow Plugs! Great Compression and All fuel lines and hoses were also replaced or updated. Also both front L/H and R/H motor mounts were replaced with new ones! :)-Brake service: All front disc brake components had been recently serviced and were working well, e we replaced a few rubber and steel brake lines and hoses along with Brand New FAG Rear Brake Wheel Cylinders after cutting the drums!-Steering, uspension, heel and Tires: Checked and lubricated all steering and Suspension parts and all appeared to be in acceptable and safe tolerances. we replaced/updated the well worn tires with an acceptable set of used Michelin Tires with over 60% tread(but believed to be 10-15 years old) and a set of Very Nice Hub Caps and Trim Rims. Sub-frame mounts done, ut it will be needing rear shocks at some point in the future. It still drives like a tank with a very safe and stable/firm feel that these care are famous for, nd handles much better than it looks to be able to!$5,500-plus in Mechanical repairs, pdates and restoration in 2012-2014 This particular car is a hard to find (in this condition), tarts quickly and willingly for an older Diesel, t shifts through all the gears with ease and without any noticeable drive-line noises or hesitation, rake, teers and Handles modern traffic fairly well for an almost 50 year old car with no major problems. All the repairs that we did were done safely and professionally without cutting any corners mechanically. I am in possession of a Clear Indiana Title in My Name. I would strongly recommend towing it home rather than driving, nless you live fairly close by, s I have only used it locally putting less than 100 miles on it. Not being driven in over a 16 months I would recommend new tires for any lengthy trip. While waiting on paint and body shop I had an opportunity to buy a newer W123 300CD Turbo Diesel with an automatic Transmission, hus the reason we are letting her go!
