Description of 1992 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 300TE

1992 Mercedes Benz 300 TE 4Matic Wagon

This is a rare example of a classic wagon. It has been maintained and renewed where necessary and is in very good condition for a twenty three year old car. I bought this car in June of 2013 with 81,400 miles on it. It has been our road trip car for the last two years and has been utterly comfortable and reliable.

I own several Mercedes, nd am selling this one only because I recently stumbled into the chance to purchase one of my dream cars—a Mercedes E55 wagon. So I now have too many cars. The 124 is not a concours car, ut a wonderful daily driver that is in remarkable condition. I took very good care of it during my stewardship, s I was planning to keep in indefinitely and I am very particular about my cars. I cannot abide things that don't work properly and work on every one to get it to as close to perfect as possible, echanically and cosmetically.

Since I have owned the car I have kept a log of all of the maintenance, epairs and upgrades I have done. The log book will be included in the sale.

Major items:

  • All fluids flushed—oil and filter (synthetic blend), TF and filter (Royal Purple), ydraulic fluid for SLS (Self Leveling Suspension) and 4matic (Mercedes fluid), ifferential (Mobil 1)

  • Front left and right drive axles replaced (remanufactured by CVJ Axles in Denver)

  • Rear CV joints disassembled, arefully cleaned and repacked with new boots. The joints are in great shape with virtually no wear—the boots had surface cracks but they were intact and there was no contamination to the grease.

  • Rear 5- link suspension replaced. The four smaller links were replaced and the main control arms have new bushings on both ends

  • New rear subframe bushings (not a small job)

  • New differential mounts (all 4)

  • New driveshaft center support and flex disks (2)

  • Front strut mounts and bump stops replaced

  • Front rotors and ceramic pads replaced

  • Front and rear spring seats replaced

  • Alternator replaced

  • Seat heaters added

  • Replaced driver's seat back leather due to worn bolster

  • Motor mounts replaced

  • Timing chain tensioner replaced

  • Rear hydraulic accumulators for the SLS replaced

  • EHA replaced

  • Fuel distributor rebuild with ethanol compatible seals

  • Front and rear ABS sensors replaced

  • Center and rear mufflers replaced

  • Headlights replaced with European Hella H4 units (FAR superior to US headlights) and protective film added to prevent stone chips

  • New thermostat (fail-open design) and upper and lower radiator hoses

  • New Bosch Copper Super spark plugs, istributor cap, otor and plug wires

  • And many other smaller things, ncluding power lock vacuum pump, ailgate struts, ll fuses with ceramic, ire cover, ew fuel lines, ransmission modulator, il pressure sender, LS connecting rod, ear hatch struts, ear window washer line and more

I have been replacing interior parts as needed. Interior is in exceptional condition. The windows are tinted. All switches work. All bulbs work. There are new Coco Mats in front and a Weather Tech liner in the back. There is even a Weather Tech liner for the foot area of the third row seat. The sunroof works, ower antenna works, ear window washer works, utomatic hatch closer works...everything works as it should.

Wheels are recently acquired used 17"factory Mercedes alloys with brand new General G Max AS-03 235/45/17 tires. Also included are the original 15"Mercedes wheels with like-new Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT 195/65/15 tires (see pictures). Both sets of wheels include a spare wheel with a mismatched tire.

The stereo has been completely redone. It has a top of the line Jensen Heavy Duty JHD3630BT head unit chosen because it is one of very few units that don't look like a galactic video game which would ruin the look of the car. It sends signal to a 5 channel amplifier that powers 4 high end Focal CA1 speakers in the stock locations. These are two-way speakers that have inverted aluminum domes and an internal 12db/octave crossover. The amplifier powers the Focals using a high pass filter to keep them from distorting and the low end is filled in with a Pioneer subwoofer built into the spare tire that has its own remote level control wired up to the console. The Jensen accepts a Bluetooth connection facilitating both wireless music and hands free phone operation through its own microphone.

The good:

  • The W124 chassis wagon is rare and becoming rarer with each passing year. This is the last of the over-engineered hand built E-class Mercedes. According to Haggerty, he 300TE is one of the 5 classics you should buy today. "...nothing whispered "old money"more than a Mercedes-Benz wagon. The 124-chassis cars were expensive heirloom-quality cars at a time that Lexus and Infinity were redefining the luxury class and changing customer expectations about value." The price of this car in 1992 (approx. $65,000) is over $110K in today's dollars.

  • This color is exceptionally rare (exterior code: 888; interior code:265)

  • This has not been smoked in

  • A/C has been converted to R134a refrigerant (previous owner)

  • Most W124s had the MBtex (vinyl) interiors rather than leather.

  • Most are higher mileage examples

  • Most have had their 4matic systems disabled rather than properly maintained

  • Most have had the SLS replaced with an aftermarket standard suspension. The 4 matic works well and is extremely capable. I treated the underbody with Fluid Film (a lanolin based anti corrosion system) and drove it through the Minnesota winter. It is a fantastic winter car. The SLS system is intact and the ride is wonderful.

The not as good:

  • The clear coat on the roof and the topmost portion of the hatch has been coming off. It was like this when I bought the car and had I kept it I would have had it resprayed.

  • There are various small chips and scratches on the otherwise very nice paint

  • The bumpers have evidence of some small traumatic events from before I bought the car. All of the above is noted in the photos.

  • There was a small amount of rust in the spring seat of the left front side which we removed and treated with the Miracle System from MercedesSource (a wonderful source of parts and information) and then coated with commercial truck bed liner (several coats of each). There is a photo of this area as well

  • The rear subframe had a damaged mounting point where one link connected. When the subframe was out for the rear suspension/bushing work, e repaired and painted that area, nd also sanded and coated it with POR 15 (several coats). The window tint has been scratched on the passenger window and scuffed on the hatch window.Otherwise, he body of this car is remarkable for its age.

I will be happy to answer any questions a potential buyer might have. Keep in mind this is a twenty three year old car and is sold as is. I have attempted to be as thorough as possible in my disclosure. There are manymore photos in the link below, ncluding underbody pictures, nd flaws:
