Description of 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series

Great Running 1984 300SD - Cold A/C!!!

I bought this car seven years ago on eBay myself and I love it and I'm sad to sell it. I moved to NY a few years ago but always put it in storage for when I came to LA to visit. Last year it was a road trip to Portland and back. A very reliable car... but now it's time to start a family, o the car must go.

If you've never driven a classic Mercedes diesel - especially the 300SDs - they can feel huge and sloppy at first - like a boat. They take a little while to warm up and it takes a little time for you to realize how well-built and nimble these cars can truly be. It's is the best highway car I've ever owned and it loves to drive between 75 and 80.

I have taken good care of it. I've cared less about its looks than its insides. I've only used OEM parts and I've tried to keep it as functionally operational as possible. I never converted it to run on pure vegetable oil - but I did burn B99 (biodiesel) for a couple of years. Biodiesel is better - smells good and has almost no smoke - even with full turbo. It's better for the engine too.

Here are the good things:

- CA car.

- Original paint - not pretty, ut it's nothing hiding anything either.

- A/C Blows Cold! - Last year I had a complete air conditioner overhaul (new compressor, eceiver, tc.) with R-12 from a Mercedes Certified mechanic . Don't let anyone try and convince you to convert to R134 - do the research on it first.

- New Battery - less than two months old.

- Power windows, ower locks and sunroof work.

- New wheels. When I bought this car someone had chromed the wheels and they were starting to leak air. I replaced with reconditioned original Bundt wheels in 2013.

- Yokohama tires with decent tread left.

- New OEM front and rear shocks in 2013

- New OEM engine and transition mounts in 2011.

- New OEM front and rear flex disks in 2013. This is important!!! Google '300SD flex disk failure'. These should last you another decade or so.

- New OEM Glow Plugs around 2011.

- Just had the engine shock absorbers replaced (the engine has tiny little shock absorbers to keep it from shaking too badly).

- Replaced diesel uptake lines with Viton (biodiesel safe).

- Has MB Tex (fake leather) interior. It looks real but is much more durable.

- I rebuilt the driver's seat with a newer box spring - these commonly fail.

The Bad:

- The paint is old and fading/missing clear coat, tc.

- Turn signal return doesn't work in one direction (you have to turn off the turn signal manually after you turn).

- Minor damage to the driver's side rear quarter panel. Someone drove into it while I was parked and then drove away :( I was going to wait until I was ready to repaint it to have it repaired, ut that didn't happen.

- Missing some wood trim on the rear doors.

- Wood trim on the glove box needs to be glued back on.

- Antenna doesn't go up - but that's an easy replacement.

- Radio might not work - I forgot to test it when I was in LA and it was blinking in a strange way. But it might work.

- Two cracks in the dash from the sun.

- A cut or two in the driver's seat upholstery.

- It's ready to have an oil change.

- Interior is dingy and could use some detail work.

As I mentioned, was more concerned about keeping it running well than keeping it beautiful. It's a great car and with upkeep typical of an older car - this one should last a very long time. Please feel free to ask questions.
