Description of 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series |
In the grand tradition of Mercedes-Benz touring convertibles, his 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300CE convertible offers bulletproof reliability combined with entertaining performance and room for four in first-class comfort. Really, s there a better way to spend a few hours than behind the wheel of a car like this?Cutting the roof off an E-Class coupe was probably an obvious move, nd it created a car that was a little less sporting than the SL but a bit more luxurious and elegant. Clean, nadorned lines make for a great-looking 4-seater, specially in black, nd there's no question that this is a high-end motorcar with a lot of charisma. Fit and finish are, f course, o Mercedes-Benz standards and even after 20 years, t still wears its original paint. Of course, hat paint was expensive, oo, nd has survived living in the warm southern US quite well, ith just minor signs of age and use, ertainly in line with its price and mileage. Built at a time when engineers, ot marketers, uled the Mercedes-Benz headquarters, uality is tangible but the styling is conservative, hich is how many folks prefer their luxury cars. There's not much chrome, ut the bright trim that is on the car looks great and the lower cladding in dark gray makes the car look long and sleek. The gray leather interior is equally stylish and sleek, howing a few luxurious touches like real burled walnut on the door panels and center console. The front buckets are supportive and comfortable for cross-country drives and the leather hides are in excellent condition; that's quality and excellent care doing that. Despite a lifetime in the sun, he dash pad, arpets, nd other soft parts look great and it should all look familiar, s the Mercedes-Benz styling was nothing if not consistent. Just about everything was standard, ncluding power windows, ocks, irrors, nd seats, utomatic climate control, ruise control, nd a full array of easy-to-read gauges. The original and somewhat anemic stereo system has been replaced by a newer AM/FM/CD stereo, hich sounds great top up or top down. And speaking of the top, t's probably the original black canvas piece and shows some wear and a few patches, ut it's for emergencies only since you'll be spending most of your time in the sun. The trunk is remarkably spacious and nicely finished with matching carpets and even a courtesy light.Power comes from a 3.2 liter DOHC inline-six that's as silky as a turbine and torquey enough to make the big convertible feel quick and light on its feet. It's also legendary for its durability and thanks to proper maintenance throughout its life it's still spry and smooth-running. The engine bay is extremely clean and it runs with a soft purr from the exhaust that's befitting a vehicle of this stature. Everything works, ncluding the A/C, nd the 4-speed automatic transmission is so unobtrusive that you might think the engine is electric, ot internal combustion. The all-independent suspension is supple yet agile enough to be fun when the road starts to turn and braking is typical Mercedes-Benz: powerful. Original alloy wheels show no major wounds or curb rash and are wrapped in relatively recent 195/65/15 Michelin radials.Where else will you find this much German elegance and class for so little cash? This is a car that can still be used as a daily driver or fair weather toy, ll at a very reasonable price. Call today! |
