Description of 1974 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series |
Hello and Thank you for checking out my listing. I am selling my collection of Vintage Diesel Mercedes. This is the 1st one up. As a collector I can appreciate the value of honest dealings when making a purchase. With this in mind, I will share with you my history with this car and why I’m selling it. I first saw the car in Roswell Georgia the fall of 2012. I fell in love with the classic lines and the and White on White color combo.
I purchased the car for $3,000 after test driving it. fyi-The owner told me he purchased it from woman who purchased it from Bob Hope’s wife Dolores Hope. The car was sluggish even for a 240 diesel, I assumed after a valve adjustment from a competent mercedes mechanic I could get as much power as one would expect from a 240D. However after taking the car to Atlanta Autohaus located 109-A Oak Street Roswell, GA 30075 (770) 998-5850, I was told by the owner Dean Thompson that it would be better for me to replace the engine since wanted to use it as daily driver. While Dean was searching around for the ideal motor for me, he took ill. And after about a year of waiting to see who would now be servicing my car, his son’s took over the business. They also, hired a manager Chuck Hendricks who became my point of contact. By the time I heard from Chuck, Dean had died and one of the sons would now be repairing my car. The son /new mechanic felt he could service the engine to the point that it would run as well as any well maintained diesel engine would for the age of the car. (see image of invoice for repairs made and paid for) I remember feeling good that I could have this beautiful car on the road for a lot less than I had anticipated paying for another engine, as suggested by his father Dean. After a reasonable amount of time, I picked up the car from Atlanta Autohaus and drove it home to suburban Phila, PA. It was a great ride home, at least for me, my wife hated it, not enough pick-up for her. (she drives a Tesla model S). This is not the car to race in for sure. However, once your at cruising speed it picks up and maneuvers through traffic fairly well. Not so much if you plan to drive regularly in a steep mountainous area. After the the nearly 1,000 mile drive from Atlanta GA to my home in PA, and few hundred miles later the engine compression just dropped, the engine was knocking and the oil was very low in spite of a new oil change. My long time mercedes mechanic in the Phila area, replaced the damaged oil pan. (I did not remember hitting any pot holes) and adjusted the valves. Even after these repairs, the car did not have enough compression to drive safely and the knocking noise was unbearable. I now see replacing the engine would have been the best value. The car has not been driven since the fall of 2015. ****The car has round fog lights installed, not pictured**** ****I have a brand new complete set of factory seat covers in the same mercedes pattern and cream color that would have came with the car in 1974. I will include for FREE in the BUY NOW price. ($1,000 value) |
