Description of 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE |
| eBay Template
This low-grille 280SE coupe was purchased new from the Mercedes-Benz dealer "House of Imports" in Brea, CA in August 1970 and is a great example of a true California Car. The lack of rust, corrosion and other signs of aging make this car a wonderful survivor. I have no doubt that it could be driven coast-to-coast, or be someone's only car, without any problem. Take a close look at the photos of this beautiful white on tobacco brown car with sunroof. This car is not to be confused with your regular 280SE coupe that came with a 6-cylinder engine. For the 1970 and 1971 model year Mercedes-Benz created the 280SE 3.5 coupe which came with the 3.5 liter V-8 engine. To accommodate the larger engine they widened the front grille. And for the North American market the cars included certain options as standard items like electric windows and the Behr Air Conditioning system. So the best I understand it, a buyer in the U.S. could special order the 3.5 coupe package but select to have the 6-cylinder engine installed instead, hence the wide "low-grille" that was designed for the needs of the larger engine but with the other improvements as well. It is estimated that between the coupes and cabriolets there were less than 500 of these low-grille 6-cylinder cars built, making it more rare than the 3.5 coupe. Whether that will affect the value, only time will tell!
