Description of 1986 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Roadster

1986 Mercedes Benz 560SL - With V8 engines increasingly common aboard full-size Mercedes sedans during the late '60s, it was inevitable that a V8-powered SL would appear. But in 1972, few would have expected that the new SL (code-named "R107" inside Mercedes) would define personal luxury cars for almost two decades, and over that time, be powered by eight different engines. The story is that while it was under development at Mercedes, the R107 was referred to as "der Panzerwagen" because it weighed more than 3,400 pounds -- that's 300 or so more than the Pagoda, but still slightly short of a battle tank. Compared to the Pagoda SL, the R107's wheelbase was 2.5 inches longer, and it was about a quarter-inch wider and a quarter-inch lower. However, the styling, with horizontal headlights (paired round ones in North America, single squarish units in the rest of the world) and fluted rear taillights, made the new car appear much wider. Mercedes finally did something about the early SL's lagging performance for the 1986 model year by shoehorning in a new 5.6-liter version of the all-aluminum V8 pumping out 238 horsepower and a healthy 287 pound-feet of peak torque. Beyond that, the new power was routed through a new, silken four-speed automatic transmission, and the 560SL was quickly recognized as the fastest R107 yet.

It could wisely be stated that the Mercedes SL is just about the best classic car one could currently purchase. Where else can you find a well-engineered classic that has all the comforts of a late model vehicle and can be driven daily. Not to mention that they are just plain sexy and appreciate in value with each passing day. And if that wasn't enough, this beautiful example was owned by a meticulous owner and has a HIGHLY documented history. In fact, there is so much documentation with this SL that we would confidently say it is the most highly documented example on the market. The story of this Mercedes started in April 1986 when a lucky FL gentleman received this 560SL as a 45th birthday present from his lovely wife. It remained in his care until 2013 and during that time he retained all the original documentation and equipment that came with the vehicle. These items include; owners manuals, window sticker ($52,300), sales invoice, all factory documentation, 2 data plates, the first aid kit, and the complete tool kit. The proud owner even kept a log of every single time he put gas in his baby along with the corresponding per gallon price and odometer reading! The vehicle was sold to a friend in Evergreen, CO who became the 2nd registered owner in Nov 2013. Due to the small size of the CO town and the obvious weather in that part of the US, the Mercedes was driven under 200 miles in his tenure. It was his "nice summer weekend" car and never saw an icy road. When we learned the SL was going to be offered for sale we quickly purchased the vehicle and brought her to TX. Service work completed within the last 100 miles includes; A/C service, motor mounts, valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, and a new shifter bushing. Additional features and options include; 5.6L V8 Engine, Auto, A/C, SRS Airbags(442), Auto Climate Control(581), Chrome Bumpers/Grill, Heated Mirrors(506), Power Windows, Fog Lights, Original Becker AM/FM/Cassette Radio(519), Power Antenna(531), Tire Tools, Spare Tire, Factory 15" Alloy Wheels, and thick Michelin Energy 205/65/R15 Tires! Both tops are in excellent shape and there is an addition cover for the cockpit when the top is down. Please look up the current book values on this vehicle... CPI Black Book = $40,750. Hagerty Guide = $46,300! This is a rare opportunity to purchase an exceptional foreign classic at about 1/2 its current value. And if that wasn't enough, this Mercedes is now over 25 years old and it therefore officially recognized as a "classic." Being a classic vehicle awards the owner large discounts on registration, inspections, and most importantly insurance.
