If not forShah of Iran(at the time a significant Mercedes shareholder) to Mercedes and his passion to make ultimate 4X4 vehicle based on the highly successful Jeep Wrangler, the Mercedes-Benz immortal G Wagon line would never have come to production.
As a result, the production of G Wagon started in 1979. Very few of them where made in convertible version. Only after fall of 1987 standard rack rail cabrio was replaced by fold-able top. This 1988 is one of the first G wagon to become a true convertible. This version is about 450 pounds lighter than the standard SWB version. In all, just a few hundred cars were ordered and built – approximately 2% of the total G Wagon production.
This Car
Designed for Safari and off road, this all original1988 Mercedes G Class Convertible Maroon - Burgundy matching numbers, part time 4 wheel drive with high, low, 2 and 4 wheel range, with availability to shift from 2X4 to 4X4 on the go, 5 speed manual transmission,5 passenger seating with option to add 2 side facing rear seats with seat belts, side steps, rear mount original spare wheel, with all original front and back matching number lights and windows, updated OEM seats throughout,with custom made Sonenland top ( valued at $7000 ) as replica of original 1988 top i still have. Completed on April 11, 1988, S/N 7060340 was appropriately finished in metallic Burgundy over a gray interior. The G230 cabrio was also outfitted with Aluminum wheels, the Gas mechanical fuel injected motor and 5 speed manual transmission per specifications and records that i have.
On May 27, 1988, the G Wagon was sent to Munich where it was sold to original owner i purchased it from 3 years ago. Upon Sergeis arrival to his lake home in summer 1991 i fell in love with it. This G wagon was an extravagant machine on the roads of the lake home every summer until late 2000s.
Original owners son can confirm history of this G wagon from early days. Every year until 1999 it was transported back to Germany for services in Mercedes certified dealership. This 1988 G WagonS/N WDB46021817060340 is extremely RARE Hard to find mint condition 98% original factory paint W460 factory convertible.
The matching numbers low mileage, as well as its solid state, which was no doubt a benefit of having spent 25 years in heated lake house garage and being used only few months every summer.
In late 2011 during my summer vacation love happens again after 20 years. This time i didnt need to be afraid to touch it as in 1991, it was lifted with wheels off the ground ready to be awaken after a winter sleep. We lowered it, connected battery and it was ready to drive. It took me 2 years of negotiations to buy it, followed by 4 months of restoring the convertible top and seats, i was finally able to enjoy it summer of 2014 for 1 week.
With new restaurant on the way Im ready to part ways with my old love.
This all original has only 183995km ( 114997 miles ) and I have supporting original documentation. Car shows 83995km on the original 5 digit odometer.
All services where conducted beginning of 2016, as well as full detailing. One deviation from the original is tire cover - perfectly painted to match color but not new G class style that would ruin this Convertible original look, it is a marvelous touch. Additionally AM/FM cassette player is in perfect working condition but not factory original,the Becker radio from 1988 would be era correct. Original fire extinguisher is located in front of the front passenger seat and i have not been able to purchase age correct second one that should be located under the seat.
The finish of the GE230 is of the highest level and the car retains a very correct appearance since 1988, please look at all pictures to see 2 areas that show start of corrosion, very common for these G wagons . The original engine, differential, and transmission remains with matching numbers to prove, also in wheel-well - front right frame.
7060340is a sensation to drive. Its road manners are what one would expect from any beautifully engineered motorcar. The true excitement, however, is when this ultimate 4X4 top comes off you can experience a true pleasure.With abundant power and thrill to drive this G Cabrio is simply addictive.
