Description of 1971 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class |
This outstanding final year 280 SL was just purchased from the one local owner of 42 years. Totally original with the exception of one overall repaint done long ago. This 280 SL has always been properly serviced and maintained at our local Mercedes Benz Dealership over it's entire life. There are no rust or damage issues whatsoever and the cosmetic condition of this car is very presentable just as the sits today. The overall paint was a very professional job and has held up very well but is not show quality. Exterior chrome. trim and glass is very good except for two items. a broken left front parking lamp lens and small dent in the rear bumper. The small chrome extensions are not in place on the tailpipes. The interior is 100% original and shows very well. Seats are showing some wear and inner foam cushions are breaking down. Original carpets are very good but rubber heel pad on drivers side is worn out thru. The dash is near perfect except for one cracking in cover over speedometer housing. Interior wood trim is very nice and not split. All gauges and controls operate properly. Trunk compartment is near mint with the original rubber mat. spare tire with cover. lifting jack and the full original tool set in the factory tool roll. Underhood is tidy but has never been detailed or restored in any way. There are no mechanical modifications and the entire drivetrain is original matching numbers to this particular car. Underside is rust and damage free. relatively clean but again unrestored. No serious leaks of any type are evident. recent years saw a complete exhaust system replaced that is in very good condition. The Black convertible top is original to the car and is still in quite good condition as the long term owner preferred the car as a coupe and tells us the hardtop was seldom ever removed. Family memories tell us they have no memory of ever seeing the car as a convertible with the top down. This 280 SL is a joy to drive. A very thorough recent service has been done and the car runs and drives very well. Engine is quiet. good performance and starts easily hot or cold. Transmission shifts smoothly. actually better than any other one I have ever driven. Outstanding original documentation stayed with this car since 1971 including owners manual. serial number embossed warranty book. 1971 dated dealer directory. soft-top operation instructions. parts catalog. shipping import cards and build specification cards. All of this is still in the original Mercedes-Benz plastic document case. Also in place are the two top removal levers in their original sleeve and the appear to be brand-new supporting the fact of the top having hardly ever been removed from the car. There can be few better examples of the last production year of the very popular Pagoda roof SL roadsters. This car being an air-conditioned automatic. totally original with bullet proof documentation this is an outstanding opportunity to acquire one of these rapidly appreciating models.
