Description of 1970 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 280 SL |
We offer for sale our 1970 Mercedes 280SL. This is NOT the worn out tale of some mystery barn find. We purchased this car from its original owner's son, who used it as a daily driver for many years. After market conditions elevated it from scruffy driver to world class collectible, the former owner stored it properly, using it as a fair weather toy while attempting a rolling restoration. As is obvious from the photos, the car would benefit greatly from an interior refurbishment. We encourage serious bidders to examine the photos closely. What makes this car so appealing is that it could justifiably be elevated to roadworthy weekend driver condition, or given a complete restoration to any level without having to address major rust issues.. The car runs and drives right now! The engine runs well, with the slight valve train noise that all of these old 6 cylinder Benzes have when in need of adjustment. It has a manual transmission which operates properly along with a properly functioning clutch. The engine compartment is untouched. It is showing the dirt/roaduse of a 47 year old automobile. We drove it around locally with no overheating issues, proper oil pressure, and firm braking. In addition to needing interior refurbishment, it also needs a headliner for the hardtop, and a convertible top. The rails and bows are present, but the top needs to be replaced. The exterior shows very nicely--look closely at the photos, the car is very attractive with no exterior rust or damage. The rockers, trunk, lower fenders, fender tops, and lower 1/4 panels are all rust free. As can be seen in the photos, there is slight rust in the passenger foot well, and the beginning of rust in the driver's foot well. The glass is all free of cracks or major blemishes. All of the chrome is showing its age, with some pitting and fading. Please know that although we have driven this car around locally in order to assess its condition, we suggest it be towed from our facility. It will require a mechanical/safety inspection before it can be considered truly road ready. Additionally, because of its age, the title reads exempt, and we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the odometer. Now that properly reconditioned examples are selling into the 6 figure range, we believe that affordable, worthy restoration candidates are evaporating quickly. The car is available for inspection by appointment during our business hours. This vehicle is being sold As Is with no warranties or guaranteesof any kind. Please call or email with any questions before bidding. Sales Tax, Title, and Dealer Documentary Fee ($110), are additional.
