Description of 1956 Mercedes-Benz 190-Series SL |
Introduced in prototype form at the 1954 New York International Motor Sport Show alongside the 300SL "Gullwing", the Mercedes Benz 190SL was the brainchild of legendary U.S. automobile importer Max Hoffman. Outwardly similar to the 300SL, yet less complex and costly, the 190SL featured lightweight aluminum panels for the hood, doors, and rear deck lid, plus rigid unitized construction, roll-up windows, and an available aluminum hardtop. * Powering the 190SL is a 105-horsepower SOHC 1.9 litre 'four' with twin Solex carburetors mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. Also equipped with power-assisted "Alfin" drum brakes, plus four-wheel independent suspension comprising wishbones and coil springs up front and swing axles with a compensator spring at the rear. The production ready 190SL debuted at the 1955 Geneva show and earned design accolades in Holland, Switzerland, and at France's Grand Prix d'Elegance. * FULL MILLE MIGLIA ELIGBLE!
