Description of 1985 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

1985 was the final year of manufacture for the W107 380SL. so this one has all the factory improvements and upgrades including the all-important double roller timing chain. In addition. there are several after-market improvements. There is the very desireable fold-down rear kinderseat which adds 2 extra seats for your kids. dog. etc. This seat is upholstered in original matching German leather- not vinyl as is more commonly seen. The chrome wheels and tires are virtually new. with only about 1000 miles since installation. The original radio has been replaced with a modern AM/FM/CD audio system (the original radio will be included). There are also stainless steel trim mouldings at each wheel opening. Of course. the removable hardtop is included and is in virtually new condition. Also included is a power operated hoist system that can be attached to your garage ceiling that makes installing or removing the hardtop an easy one-person job- simply press a button to raise or lower the hardtop off from or onto the car in minutes. The combined cost of these options was over $3500 dollars. The 3. 8 liter all aluminum V-8 engine provides all the power you need for any normal driving needs. I have owned several 380SL's and 560SL's and considering all things. I prefer the 3. 8 liter engine as it is quieter and more economical to operate than the 560. The difference in power is hardly noticable. The car was purchased new for European delivery. hence it has the original Euro bumpers which are far more attractive than the so-called 5 MPH crash-proof bumpers that were mandated for all cars imported for sale in the U. S. beginning in 1985. When the original owner brought it back to the U. S. after enjoying his European vacation. he had the headlamps replaced to meet DOT standards. The second owner was a close long-time friend of mine (now deceased) who owned the car for many years. He had a condo in Florida. where it spent the majority of its life. I bought it just before my friend passed away at age 90. It has always been stored indoors under a high-quality custom-fitted cover when stored from October thru April in Michigan. Likewise. it has been always garaged when not being driven. Now that I think of it. it has only rarely been rained on. Both my friend (the previous owner) and I both rarely put the top up so most of the miles were put on in warm dry weather. Always meticulously maintained (3000 mile oil changes) and any maintenance needs have always been quickly adressed. The leather has been treated with Lexol several times per year. The chrome is vitrually flawless as is the paint. This car looks. runs. and drives as a Mercedes should. The AC blows ice cold (has been converted to R-134). and even the cruise control works properly. As shown in the photo. there are the typical cracks in the plastic rear quarter windows (one in each window). These are minor and and tight cracks- they do not interfere with visibility and do not leak when it rains. There are no cracks in the burlwood trim or dashboard. and no messy oil spots on my garage floor. In sumation- you can find cheaper SL's. but quality always pays off in the end as a worn-out or problematic Mercedes is rarely a "bargain". A $500 deposit (non-refundable) is required within 3 days of auction end. and final payment to be made within an additional 7 days. Final payment to be cash at pickup or bank-to-bank funds transfer. Title will not be transferred until final payment has cleared. No personal or cashiers checks. and no credit card payment. If you need assistance with delivery arrangements. I can help. Typically. inexpensive delivery to anywhere in North America within a week or two can be made (cheaper than flying here and driving it home unless you are close by). Please ask all questions prior to bidding and if you want more or photos. just ask. Good luck bidding.
