Description of 1978 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 500 |
1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Convertible for Sale 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SL R107 Convertible California Car ......please be patient while the many photos load..... 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Roadster for sale. Purchased new July of 1978 at R.S. Taylor Motors in Vallejo, California. The manuals show early services performed at Jim Slemmons in Newport Beach. Most current owner purchased in Palm Springs and has recently spent in excess of $4500 making this 450SL as reliable and great to drive as ever. The car was represented as a low 35k mileage car when purchased in early 2016 from Desert Motors in Palm Springs. Current mileage showing is 36,787 yet undocumented. As we understand the car ultimately went on to be a Southern California car spending much time in the Palm Springs area. The car is in excellent mechanical condition with over $4500 recently spent to ensure its reliability. Receipts available for download here. It starts; runs and drives beautifully with excellent power, smoke-free, tight suspension, and spot-on shifting. This W107 is very comfortable to drive and should provide years of reliability. The interior is tidy and clean with very nice original seating, rugs, and panels. As with most desert cars you'll notice the wood on the lower, flat part of the center console has some cracking and the dash has a cover, most likely due to cracking. Otherwise, it presents quite well and is very comfortable. Apparently, the original chocolate brown top was not used for many years. It looks to be in excellent condition though will need a warm day in the sun to stretch out a bit after being tucked away for so long. The top wrench is present and the headliner in the hardtop is in great condition. The exterior looks good as-is. At some point (most likely due to the desert heat causing the clearcoat to become thin) the car had a consumer-level repaint. Since then it has again thinned on the top of the driver's door and the hardtop shows signs of thinning. Overall it is best described as a driver-quality car - certainly not perfect but what we would call "a good ten-footer". The trim, lenses, and glass all look good. The floors and rockers are solid and rust-free. Currently, all of the gauges are in working order, there are no warning lights on, the air conditioning compressor on-off switch is rocking and feels broken, though we will replace this part and retest. The washer and the wipers are in working order, the lights are all in working order along with the power windows. The original Blaupunkt stereo with cassette player is not accepting the code though a new, modern stereo would be an inexpensive improvement. All in all the car is highly functional. Original books, manuals, and recent receipts are all included. With R107 450SL values always on the rise, this example represents a great value in an attractive, less common color combination still wearing it's original California blue and yellow license plates.
