Description of 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series

You are bidding on a minty 1984 Mercedes Benz 300CD, with only 102,000 miles.

As a car collector, I know the value of collecting the Mercedes brand. I’ve owned many fine collectibles from this marque and enjoyed a return on every one of them, from the 1958 300SL Roadster to the 1989 560SL.

The key to making money on any collectible is to buy them right. Mileage, condition, color, options, etc all play a role in making a handsome return in the future. It also helps to correctly predict which models will rise in collectibility. No one will argue that the later model 300CD Turbo Diesels from Mercedes will be one of those desired collectors cars in a short amount of time.

Only 7000 or so 300CD Turbo Diesel coupes were brought into the United States between 1981 and 1985 (the last year of import). The coupe did exist prior to 1982 (originally available from 1978 on) but only these few years saw the inclusion of the Turbo Diesel motor. Driving a non diesel model is, at best, a chore. They are extremely slow.

In 1984 the list price of the 300CD was $35,000 (with leather). A hefty sum, even today. It was a flagship model for Mercedes this year.

All Mercedes coupes, regardless of the year, are pretty. The 300CD is no exception. It’s a true coupe also, with no “B” pillar. With all of the windows down and the sunroof open, the driving experience is on par with a convertible.

With only 102,000 miles on the odometer, this 300CD is barely broken in. It runs exactly the way you would expect a well loved Mercedes to operate. The turbo adds needed power but is virtually silent in it’s operation. Further, the torque from the diesel motor, combined with the thrust of the turbo make for a satisfying driving experience. You’ll get 30 mpg on the highway too - and near 25 mpg in the city. Sure, there is the iconic Mercedes diesel clatter from under hood, but only at idle. Besides, it’s one of the more charming aspects of owning this car.

Painted, from the factory, in the color; 930 (silver blue metallic), and with a dark blue leather interior, it is one of the finest looking combinations available for this coupe.

Here is a list of maintenance items that I have recently completed:

New Michelin Tires - and I mean - new (receipt comes with the purchase)

Restored aluminum rims. Three of the four rims were sent out to be restored and refinished, this includes the lug nuts. The fourth rim was in great condition - as it was the spare rim from the trunk.

A new radio has been added. AM/FM/bluetooth/CD and usb featured.

New front and rear speakers. The original rear speaker grilles come with the car. The sound is much improved.

Undercoating

Recent Oil change

Front brakes are new (rotors were in fine shape)

Rebuilt temperature control unit - works perfectly.

New headlight surrounds. The old ones were fine, but I had an extra set of NOS units for a restoration of another 300CD

New dash lights (but they are still typically 80’s dim)

New rear turn signal units (lens) - look great.

New sunroof motor (the old one died)

New power window switches installed on the center console (the old ones were worn, but worked fine)

Items to note:

The weatherstripping is in excellent condition with minimal drying or cracking

The rubber surrounding the bumpers (front and rear) is in excellent condition;

Fog lights work perfectly (you must pull the headlight knob out)

The car stops very well

Door locks work, as does the trunk and gas filler cover

Rear defroster works great

Wipers work great

Cruise control works great

sun visors are in excellent condition and lights work

It tracks down the road beautifully

The block heater works very well (needed in Chicago)

The engine idles perfectly, starts right up

Does not smoke (with 100,000 miles, it shouldn't)

The car accelerates very well - just like it did when new

The trunk is in excellent condition with the tools, spare and jack present.

All turn signals work

All of the windows work well, except the passenger rear is a bit sleepy, but does go down.

The wood is in great condition with only a mild crack next to the shifter.

Headliner is in excellent condition

Engine compartment is very tidy

There are no cracks in the windshield

There is a crack (typical) in the dashboard (new covers are available on Ebay)

Remote mirror (passenger side) works perfectly, drivers side view mirror is manually operated

I have a new power antenna on order, the current motor on the one in the car does not work. Should be installed before pickup.

The leather is sympathetically worn, meaning, there are very minor cracks, but in excellent condition and maintaining their suppleness. Still smells like a Mercedes should with leather. No odd odors here. Great patina. The driver’s or passenger’s front seat does not sag nor slump.
The rear seats appear to have never been sat upon.

Mechanically the car is amazing. Runs, drives, brakes, shifts as new. The automatic transmission shifts through all four gears as designed. No hard shifts. The brakes don’t pull and the car’s alignment is fine.

The hood and trunk appear to have been painted at some point. They look great, but - as a southern car - there must have been some fading - and of course, paint chips. The color match is nearly 100% correct but I’m fussy. You probably won’t notice it at all. Further, we undercoated the rust free chassis for future safekeeping. There was no visible rust on the chassis. It’s very solid.

I get thumbs up and admiring looks everywhere I go and I am very bullish on the upside potential of these coupes. There are several on Ebay priced over $30,000 (one is at $39,999), proof that they are coming into their own, in terms of collectibility.

Due to the age of the car it is being sold, as is. There is no warranty implied or expressed. Inspections are welcomed and encouraged, as are test drives. Additional pictures available via email, as requested. I report non paying bidders, as this is a legal contract. Please don’t waste my time.

Paypal deposit within 48 hours and it is non-refundable - balance within 7 days. Wire or cash are preferred. No paypal for the balance (fees are high). Bank checks and certified checks take days to clear so no delivery of the car can take place until all/any checks clear. No exceptions.

I can assist with shipping at the buyer’s expense. International buyers are fine too. The car is in a covered storage area - and safe from the weather and can remain there for a reasonable period of time providing payment is made promptly and status and ETA of shipper are disclosed.

Happy Bidding.
