Description of 1989 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class |
For Sale My Beloved 1989 Mercedes Benz 560SL In Pearl Black metallic, with grey leather, a rare and desirable colour combination. In fact less than 2000 were built in this colour scheme. 1989 is the last model year this iconic vehicle was built. It happened to be lowest production run before the model was discontinued. Potentially making this model year the most desirable for collectors globally. The last of the R107 models, came with modern rear suspension from the W124 chassis. This makes for a great ride, and handles the extra power of the 5.6 litre V8 with ease. I bought her with the intention of a light restoration, However my circumstances dictate otherwise. The previous owner, who subsequently had the vehicle for 7yrs, purchasing it from the original owner. He has comprehensive service history of his time of ownership. (I will pass on his contact details to the purchaser). Mechanical. She drives great. Fires up instantly, has full oil pressure. The engine is strong, with a deep V8 bellow under heavy throttle. The idle is a little rough when cold. I think a good service will sort that. There is no smoke on start up or under throttle she doesn’t burn oil. There are no overheating issues, oil is clean. The 4 speed transmission shifts smoothly, 1989 models came with a beefier transmission, with faster kickdown. Brakes, steering and suspension are all in great working order. The heater blows hot, the AC is blows cold.
Bodywork. To realise her full beauty she will need paintwork. There is clear lifting on the hard top and rear quarters. The body is Arrow straight. There are a few tiny blisters around the vehicle, nothing major. There are a number of very small hail dents on the hood, and trunk. She looks amazing from 10 feet, and can be enjoyed as is, but a true SL lover will want to make her special. She deserves to be pampered. There is NO visible rust on the underside there is a small rust patch in the spare tyre well and the rear bumper (see photo). Not bad considering shes nearly 30yrs old. The bright-work (chrome) is in excellent condition, all exterior trim is intact. All glass is perfect, no cracks or scratches. A cosmetic restoration is all she needs to be perfect. However she can be enjoyed as is. There is nothing that need immediate attention. Personally, she deserves some love. Interior. The dash is near perfect. One hairline crack (see images) the door trim, carpets are excellent. The grey leather sports seats have some small cracking only on the base, the seat back and side bolsters are great. (seat covers, or re-upholster). There is a little wear on the drivers side bolster. The burl walnut dash is great.. All switches work as they should. Windows work great. There is a Sony mp3 CD player.
Roof. The hardtop is in excellent shape. It sits perfectly, no leaks or excessive wind noise. The headlining is clean, no tears. The soft top is in fantastic condition. No rips or leaks. The rear plastic window great, no cracks or rips. Only a slight patina of age. That can be polished out. Overall she is a clean and unrestored vehicle in need of some love (if you want her amazing), or a very usable and reasonably priced classic 560SL. Wheels. The original ‘flat faced’ alloy wheels are in excellent shape. The tyres are virtually brand new, however they are studded. Great for winter, or snow. I have a set of 16 x 8’ Ronal Penta wheels that I was going to fit. Theses are extremely rare and worth over $1000 alone. I’ll throw them in for the lucky buyer. See link https://www.ebay.com/i/253104188434?chn=ps Looking for an enthusiast to give her the love she needs. If you have read this far, then you know what these vehicles will be worth in the coming years. Again, I hate to sell her. But life gets in the way sometimes. My plan was to restore the paintwork, fit euro bumpers and fit the Ronal wheels. I think they are the best looking wheels on the R107, keeping that retro look, but being wide enough to fit modern tyres for performance and ride quality.
