Description of 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series W124 |
1993 Mercedes Benz 300CE Convertible. Chassis No: WDBEA66E1PB864108 '93 Mercedes Benz 300CE Convertible in white with a gray leather interior. No reserve price. Mercedes-Benz 300CE Convertible is considered the flagship of the luxury Sports Convertible segment and a coveted model among Mercedes-Benz collectors. It combines the typical German engineering, build quality, and performance of their sports cars with the luxury and comfort. The 300CE Convertible was created by fitting Mercedes' an excellent in-line 6 cylinder 24V DOHC engine, producing 217 hp/ with229 ib/ft of torque , 3.0 L M104.980 I6 (3.2 L M104.992 I6), thus creating an amazing combination of performance and luxury. This new combination allowed the 300CE Convertible to accelerate from 0-60mph in less than 8 seconds and touch 140 mph, while also maintaining stellar handling and comfort. It was the first four-seat Cabriolet to grace Mercedes-Benz's lineup since 1971's 280 SE. Mercedes launched a cabriolet (convertible) version in Europe in late 1991, the 300CE-24 cabriolet, and in the UK (RHD) and Japan (LHD). The 320CE, and North America, the 300CE, in 1992. A 124 Cabriolet was heavily altered from the Coupe it was based on. It gained more than 300 pounds of sheetmetal reinforcements and vibration dampers, as well as a windshield reinforced to act as a roll-over bar, which worked in conjunction with two spring-loaded roll-over bars behind the back seat. The Cabriolet's insulated cloth roof, furnished by Karmann and fitted with a heated glass window was almost completely automatic: The operator only had to release or fasten the header catch and actuate a button. This car was breathtaking $76,500 MSRP ($125,640 in today's dollars). And there wasn't even much of an aerodynamic penalty for this soft top, as the Cd only slipped .02, to .32. Both 300 CEs (Cupe and Cabriolet) received the 300 SE's larger 3,199-cc, DOHC 24-valve inline-six, which featured HFM sequential fuel injection and maintained the 217-hp figure while gaining 34 pound-feet of torque. The standard 15 x 6.5-inch alloy wheel design was updated, and a passenger front airbag was added for 1993. Many extra features were included as standard items. The 300CE Convertible was not inexpensive by any standards, it was the the most expensive model in the four-seat open-top class, but brilliantly engineered and it's well rounded performance made it the sports convertible to have in 1993. Its high cost also contributed to its low production numbers with only limited numbers of units being produced. Of those cars produced, only fraction of them made it to the United States. That make them ultra rare collectors. The 300CE Convertible was considered to be one of the most sophisticated cars of its time, and still today it has a devoted following in the automotive collector car world. It is the perfect combination of performance and luxury. Mercedes-Benz USA's E-Class sales records don't break out individual body styles, but one source puts 1991's 300 CE Coupe sales figure at 1,302 units, the 1993 Coupe/Cabriolet at 891/593 units respectively, and ditto for 1994's 1,530/595 and 1995's 1,798 and 322.. These were expensive, low-production cars. Being based on the globally popular, immensely proven 124 the Coupe's and Cabriolet's mechanicals hold no mystery. They date back to a time when Mercedes-Benz engineered many components to be serviceable. Mercedes-Benz Classic Center spokesman Constantin von Kageneck says, "Most mechanical parts are available, while others, such as interior trim, are not as broadly available. It's always worth checking for specific parts availability, as Mercedes-Benz actively manages the classic parts catalog." Combining efficient, ageless design and a distinctly German take on luxury, the 124 Cabriolet is among the Mercedes-Benzes that could truly be considered heirloom-quality. It remain practical for everyday use, and is undoubtedly "youngtimer" classic car that will be cherished in the future. Arguably one of Mercedes most sought after classic vehicle. Description: A very good example of this rare model, which is very hard to find. Rarely a nicer one comes on the market. A great previously owned, smoke-free automobile. One owner, original BC car, I acquired recently. It starts on the first key, very good mechanically, with beautifully and smooth running engine. The car is completely original and shows very well. The interior is clean, in great condition, all original. The wood around the dash is in excellent shape, flawless with no cracks and the cabin has a wonderfully luxurious feel to it. All of the door panels are in very good condition showing almost no signs of wear. All seat are nice without cracks or splits on them. The trunk area is nice and clean. It can be driven as daily driver or kept as collector. In terms of mechanical performance, it is about as good as you are likely to find, at any price. The transmission shifts crisply/firmly. The vehicle's exterior is clean. The doors, bonnet and boot lid all exhibit factory perfect shut lines, and all close with a resounding clunk that is indicative of the ultra high build quality these cars are famous for. The engine runs quietly, idles smoothly and pulls like a train. The soft top looks brand new. The hydraulic fluid reservoir, located in the trunk floor's lower right recess; needs to be topped up with the fluid. The correct fluid is Febi-Bilstein.
