Description of 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series W123 |
With much regret I am listing my beloved W123 wagon for sale. I’m moving soon to Vermont, where a rear wheel drive vehicle will not do too good (ice and snow, you know). I’ve owned this car for a little over two years now. Previous owner resided in PA. He owned this car in two separate occasions. I have not researched the vehicle’s previous life. The car is 100% complete and drives absolutely fine. Non-catalyst version. Most of the money I’ve spent has been in mechanicals, but some cosmetic items have been upgraded.I’ve replaced brakes, including calipers and rigid lines to the rear train. New fan clutch. New battery 2 weeks ago. New matching Kumho with 500 miles on them. Rims are like new. As a matter of fact one was factory new, never used until 6 months ago (previous owner sent me 4 extra rims, one of which was NOS).The biggest job I undertook was to rebuild the injectors. This was done at a very well known local authorized Bosch service center. Pump was also balanced. The car idles great and pulls amazing. Turbo kicks in at 1800 rpm as expected.Shifts in D through all the gears fine. Bowden cable recently adjusted. From N or D to R there is a one second delay and small to moderate kick. It’s done this since I bought it and has not gotten any worse. Does not bother me at all, so I decided not to mess with the vacuum controlled transmission, because it can turn into a nightmare. Again, it shifts as expected in D.All accessories work (but again I might be forgetting about something small), including air conditioning and power windows. I’ve never tried the heat (Miami = no need). Manual sliding roof. Vacuum works under engine vacuum, so I assume accumulator is leaking. Trunk lock inop, but I have a replacement one to go with the car. Windshield and rear window wipers work correctly. Rear may need a new spring (or good used arm), since it’s not wiping correctly towards the center of the swipe. All lights work. Reverse lights in perfect shape.Cruise control does not stay engaged. It will hold (accelerate) if you hold the proper lever up, but if you let go it disengages.SLS works. Accumulators are not holding pressure (probably empty). If the car sits for 2-3 days it will sag. Comes right up after starting the engine, so I know hydraulic system is working fine. There is some clunking coming from the rear end. I imagine the sway linkage (plastic) is worn out as it is a common problem. This is a very inexpensive part. The interior of the car is in well above average condition. I’d say it’s a 8 out of 10. All seats are near perfect or perfect. Still firm with no rips or tears or visible wear. Headliner has no rips or tears. Sunvisors look fine, but inner material is soft. Dash has a cap, which looks fine. A previous owner installed the highly desirable rear facing third row seating, in perfect condition, obviously matching blue. This was NOT original, but is a rather easy retrofit. Only difference is the 3-pint seatbelts vs the existing lap seatbelts. All instruments work correctly, including clock, odo and trip odo. Backlight works fine. Dimmer is a little tricky. Contacts need to be cleaned.Original Becker Europa stereo. Tape works but sometimes spits out the cassette (it’s the first time I write this word in a loooong time!). Power antenna, which is the original Hirschman, also works. The inner mast is worn out and sometimes does not extend fully. Manual antenna switch also works. Front dash speakers work fine. Rear ones were not installed/available when I bought the car, but I managed to source an OEM pair from the good guys at Mercedessource.Wood is above average, with two spots of cracked finish. In the cargo area you’ll find the extremely hard to find cargo roller/cover with the cargo/pet net. I don’t think this setup is original to this car, since it’s black, not blue, but looks like a million bucks! I added recently a new black carpet in the cargo to match this accessory. Anchors for the roller are there, but the ones for the net are not installed. I have them and instructions on how to fit them are also included.Rear hatch struts are 2 years old.Period correct German ovallicense plate fromStuttgart. The biggest issue with this car is rust. It’s not major or anything like that, but there is rust. Floors are solid, but the driver’r door lower lip is corroded. So is a small area where the rear qtr window (cargo area) RH meets the anodized trim. This is probably the worst part as far as rust goes. Other areas, very typical btw, are showing signs of rust. Like some areas of the windshield frame. All glass is fine. Windshield is not original. All other glass is Sekurit. Car has been repainted and/or clearcoated, at least in some spots (easy to notice). Color is original “Ascott Grey”. Roof rails in perfect shape. Also included are the cross bars, which are missing the rubber bushings, but those are easy to reproduce. Roof features the 5 protectors/strips, which would indicate that this roof is capable of bearing load. Newer (1 year old) headlight gates. OK, I can go on and on. I’m in love with this car. I know it very well. Send me your questions or concerns. This is my daily driver, which I will miss dearly. Mileage will increase slightly. I encourage interested parties to contact me and schedule a showing/test drive. You can bring your mechanic, friend, etc, I don’t mind. But remember that this auction is for the car, not for a test drive. If you place an offer and meet the reserve, then the car is yours. I repeat: I encourage interested buyers to come in person and inspect the car. I believe it's well represented in my description and pictures, but I don't want misunderstandings after the auction is over.Clean FL title in hand to my name. Owner’s manual pack with original climate control, cruise control and spare tags. Some service spares (filters and such), workinglift gate lock, great usedsun visor panel, one door pocket, 4 good to great extra rims also included. I'm sure I'm missing more things here, that I have and will go with the car.I will help load the car for transport if that’s required. I’ll deliver the car in person within a reasonable distance (say 50 miles).Immediate deposit required. Full payment within 3 days. Cash is king, but I will accept any form of payment, but funds need to clear before title is transferred and vehicle is handed over. Paypal is OK for full payment, but add 2.5%. Again, thanks for your interest and don’t hesitate to send me your questions. |
