Description of 1984 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series 280SE |
EXCEPTIONAL EUROPEAN (GRAY MARKET) 1984 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SEThis car was originally owned by a "little old lady" that always garaged the car and covered it with blankets living in Santa Rosa CA. In 2012 it failed the CA emissions test and was taken to my brother's German Car service center for a cost estimate on the repairs. To properly fix the emission system requires pulling the head to access an emission tube at the rear of the engine and the cost estimate was $2. 00. The woman. after having driven the car for 28 years. decided to sell the car and purchase a new Mercedes. I'd been looking for a 280SE to replace one I'd owned years before and was able to purchase the car. My brother's shop did the necessary repairs along with doing a valve job while the head was removed. Since purchasing the car I upgraded the stereo to an AM/FM/CD player. replaced the speakers that were worn out. nbsp;and have spent roughly $8. 00 on additional repairs to bring the car into near perfect mechanical condition. For insurance purposes. prior to the additional repairs. nbsp;GP Automotive estimated the value at between $10. 00-$13. 00. With the additional repairs that make the car mechanically perfect the asking price of $15. 00 is easily warranted. The car drives and performs exceptionally well. On road trips the car normally averaged about 22 mpg and dropped to about 18 mpg around town. The ride is smooth and comfortable which is expected from any Mercedes-Benz. The 280 engine from the mid-1960's is the best of all of this size Mercedes engines that were produced in different configurations for decades. It is rock solid with a bullet-proof bottom end. The specifications for the car state it will do 131 mph but I've never broken the speed limit to verify that. Since it was purchased in Germany originally. and driven around Europe so it could be imported as a used car. nbsp;I assume it was driven on the Autobahn where the top speed was possibly explored. This 280SE was a part of a pair as I also owned a 1985 280SL but sold the 280SL last year and need the garage space now for other cars I've acquired in the last couple of years. I will have the car fully detailed before shipping and anyone that purchases this car is going to be very pleased with it. More photos in a PDF file that can be sent on request. VIN WDB1260221A101318Note: Sale will include four additional Mercedes-Benz steel wheels with studded snow tires. I purchased these a couple years ago anticipating driving over a local pass one winter. that often has snow and ice. in lieu of possibly using chains that are a pain to put on in the cold of winter along the highway. While they were used on the car for that one winter (allowable in WA) the tires have very little wear on them. If you live in snow country and planning on driving during the winter then these are a huge plus to own if allowed by state laws. |
