Description of 1993 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 400SEL S420

I am selling this car for my ex-wife. who had a stroke a couple of years ago and needs assistance with such tasks. It was her primary vehicle during most of our marriage. so I am familiar with its history. This era of Mercedes S-Class is among the best-built. most over-engineered cars ever. Even at 22 years old. this car still feels carved from solid rock. The quality of materials and the fit and finish are magnificent. The original sticker price was almost $90. 00 in 1993. and it still oozes that level of quality. But it is a 22-year old car. and it is not perfect. The specifics are:The good:Runs and drives very well - this car is completely usable as-is. and has no urgent repair needs. Recent new distributor cap and plug wires ($600 plus labor)Overall the car is very straight. and as a California car it is rust-free. Never been crashed. all paint is 100% original as far as I know. In some pictures. the car looks silver but it is actually light metallic tan. Climate control works well. AC blows coldInterior is in excellent shape. No plastics are cracked. the carpets are like new. and the leather seats need a cleaning and some hide food but do not have any tears or splits in the leatherAll power windows work smoothlySunroof works smoothly. does not leakPower seat controls all workAll power mirrors work properlyAll instruments are functionalCruise control works properlyTires are relatively new. and still have plenty of treadThe not so good:Stereo has been disconnected. It was intermittently making an extremely loud buzzing noise through the speakers. due to an apparent amplifier problem. No further diagnosis was made so I don't know what will be needed to fix this. Many small electrical accessories do not work: automatic door-closing and trunk-closing. rear fender positioning poles. seat heaters. remote door locking. central door locking. The doors and trunk must be locked and unlocked with the key. There is a dent and a long gouge in the hood. along the left edge. This damage is pictured in the photos. The right corner of the front bumper is scuffed with yellow paint. probably from bumping a pole or a parking garage wall. This can likely be polished out. at least partially. I have not tried to do so. There is also a split in the lower edge of the bumper where it was damaged by a high curb. The clear-coat on the paint is beginning to craze in several spots on the car. I was not able to take any pictures which show this clearly; it would probably take a more sophisticated camera to capture it. It is subtle in most places. but is most apparent on the roof. There is a dull thumping noise from the center-rear under initial acceleration from a stop. I suspect this is a transmission mount which needs replacing but I don't know for sure. There is a mild shimmy through the steering wheel between 45 and 55 mph. This could mean the car needs tie rod ends or other suspension work. or it could be simply out-of-balance front wheels. The reserve is very low. and is based on the Kelley Blue Book values for the car. Don't bother asking for a buy-it-now price. or asking what the reserve is. I will not respond to these inquiries. If the car meets the reserve. it will sell. If it doesn't. I will probably buy the car from my ex-wife myself. This car is as cheap now as it will ever be. and it represents fantastic value for money. I love the car. and I will happily keep it if it doesn't sell here.
